Oh My Cavalier: Julianna Swaney's World of Girls, Bees, Wolves and Foxes
Julianna Swaney draws girls and bees and beekepers and wolves with eyes all over their fur. Her work is fantastic. She does a kind of modern version of the sort of illustrations that might accompany a classic book of fairytales. Not the saccharine, contemporary Disney stuff, but the darker, moodier, earthier literature of Hans Christian Andersen or the Grimm brothers.
Every time I look at her drawings, I imagine being somewhere cold, with snow, where the animals all come to life and tell you vaguely disturbing stories.
She'll be showing here in Los Angeles until March 23 at Gallery Meltdown, and then from May 1-30 at Grand Central Art Center in Santa Ana. More images after the jump.
