In the Considerable Town column in LA Weekly's print edition this week, L.J. Williamson covers the Reality Rocks Expo that took place in downtown L.A. at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel April 9 and 10.

At the convention, Williamson was a stranger in a strange land. After writing the story, she told us:

Seeing Adrien Brody would excite me. Even seeing Huell Howser would excite me. But watching a panel discussion with the 10th place winner of some long past season of American Idol, a show I've never even seen, except for the Susan Boyle clip -- which, come to think of it, wasn't even on American Idol -- does not shiver my timbers. So the Reality Rocks Expo, billed as "the ultimate reality TV fan experience," clearly wasn't created with me in mind, because I prefer to idolize people who are famous because they've actually, you know, done stuff -- besides successfully auditioning for an overblown game show.

Despite my naïveté, it was pretty easy to tell who the "stars" were at Reality Rocks, because they were the ones wearing outfits that screamed, "LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME!" Outfits that would fit right in at a porn star convention held at the 1980s-era Rainbow. Outfits that said, "Hey, I'm outrageous!" Tight fitting black leather with Bedazzler studs in the hizzy, big time. If it wasn't for that, I would have had no idea who I was supposed to be talking to, or why, and when your celebrity interview has to begin with, "Um, so who are you and why are you famous?," things are bad for everyone involved. So I wound up spending most of the day talking to reality star manager Marc Marcuse, who was, thankfully, a really interesting guy, and it was he that led me toward a clearer understanding of reality. Television, that is.
