Hessians Motorcycle Club Biker Gang and Fryed Brothers Band Gather for Movie Premiere Last Night in West L.A.

Zachary Pincus-Roth

I was driving home last night in West Los Angeles and saw what appeared to be fifty members of the Hessians Motorcycle Club attending Lee Chang-dong's perfectly-paced character study of a 66-year-old maid raising her only grandchild in Korea.

Had the Hessians been eagerly anticipating the film's arrival after it was awarded Best Screenplay at Cannes last year? Or do do they have a special place in their hearts for the Gwangju-born screen legend Yun Jung-hee? What did they think of her restrained, tour de force comeback performance after more than a decade off screen? I had to find out more.

It turns out that the bikers were exiting the premiere of I Ride, a new documentary by Daron Ker about The Fryed Brothers Band, which had taken over Laemmle's Royal Theatre for the night.

Zachary Pincus-Roth

I tracked down the band's guitarist, Tommy Fryed. "We travel all around the United States and these camera guys followed us and filmed some of our gigs and we just brought it back to share with everybody," he told me. "Some of the people [here] are in it and some of the people know of other people in it."

Fryed described the band's music as "country rock and boogie woogie swinging." "It's a little bit of everything," he said. "That's why we don't really know." Their main influences are the Allman Brothers and Wilie Nelson, who's featured on one of their three albums, though Tommy also grew up on Led Zeppelin and learned guitar from watching Jimmy Page. His brother Harry plays the fiddle -- that's where the country comes from. "A lot of our songs are about biking, driving on the road and just having fun," Tommy said.

So how did the screening go? "Everybody loved it," he says. "This movie will make you laugh a lot and it'll make you cry at the end. I had to leave just so I didn't cry." Uh, what about the movie made you cry? "It's just -- you just have to watch it," he said. "It's sad."

Part of the movie is about Harry and Tommy's brother Mark, who was killed on his motorcycle more than three decades ago. The film ends at his funeral. According to The Fryed Brothers Band website, the band was started in 1980 as a tribute to Mark, who wrote the movie's title song "I Ride."

"The song is really a letter that he wrote to me when I was a little kid," Tommy told me. "'I ride' -- that's what this song is, the theme of it is. It's just real touching...and I think everybody here had a tear at the end. It doesn't matter how big or bad they were -- everybody had a soft spot at the end. The lights stayed low so you don't see all the tears of these bikers that you didn't want to see."

Minutes later, Tommy, Harry and the rest of the attendees got on their motorcycles and rode away. I couldn't help but think: maybe they'd also enjoy a small Korean film called Poetry?

Writers should not right if they dont know what writing about. Such ignorance. We would be so lucky to have them all up here in CG, Oregon. Im from LB originally. Born and Bread and Always Proud of it . We would love to have the LB Hessians come visit our little town up here. Show them all what family is really all about. Honor Forever, and Death before Dishonor I always say

I ride my motorcycle everyday and am not in an MC but the motorcycle community as a whole is made up of great people from all walks of life...to say something so ignorant just shows the intelligence of the person posting...there are some MC's with a bad reputation with the law but that by no means puts them in the same category as a gang...gangs will stab each other in the back over something trivial...where in the last ride I was on to Sparks/South Lake Tahoe 2011, I hung out with a bunch of different MC's and everyone was cool as hell one dude on the ride up had ran out of gas and one dude from the Outlaws gave some random dude he's never met some gas out of his own bike just because thats what motorcycle riders do we help one another out

Just for the record. Gang is not the term you use when you talk about the Hessians, it IS a club. And in which there is love among the brothers that are in this club. But i would like to share this with all those who " Just Don't Know ". I am 50 now. I was 19 with a 3 year old dauhter, ALL my family lived on the east coast and I had no one to call family. Till one very special day , I worked in a bar they all came in. And my life has never been the same. You see all those brothers took care of me and my baby girl. They made sure i got home safe ever night .They made sure i had food in my frig. They made sure that if i liked a man...He was worthy to be liked by me. My little girl now 33, calls them ALL uncle. When she ran away and was gone for 3 days . Its was 4 of the Hessians that searched till they found her and brought her home. It took them 2 hours and 19 minutes to find her. They always looked after me. If i was getting to hard into the drugs back then. Believe me they put my ass in check. Never once did i have to "Put Out". It wasn't about that. They really loved me and the ones that are still alive still do love me.And I LOVE THEM. They have been my only family, my only hero's, my only hope when i thought there was none. So before any of you open your mouth try to walk a mile in somebody elses shoes. Cause you "Just Don't Know". I love you My Brothers...

Some of my very best friends are Hessians. Been knowing them for over 30 years. Some have passed away and are missed very much. What I love the most about the Hessians is that they are true tramps through and through!! A REAL bike club!!   Crips and Bloods........what the fuck?? I think the idiot that wrote that crap had better "walk softly creep."

hey 4-wheeler...(we call you cagers by the way) yes we are all a family and all love each other. and no the guys aren't "old" but may appear so to you because they have been busy LIVING their lives, not sitting miserably stressing over offending their neighbor.

the young guys you ask about are out making their own way in the world on their own terms on their own motorcycles. they are the next generation of bikers who will make you nervous in a movie theatre..and anywhere else where our worlds collide. have you considered that perhaps YOURS is the alternative universe? what you missed was that it is not a "love letter to clubs"..but a story of a family..and love. the fact that motorcycles are part of that family makes us (bikers) all related in a way you will never get.

I'm glad you're so proud that the 'next generation' of bikers will make people uncomfortable...  I think the idea here is to live and let live.  I was making a positive statement about what I saw and you've managed to turn that into a defensive response. I would suspect that is one of the reasons why bikers are so misunderstood.  If loving and family are so important than look at the bigger picture of the human family.  We are all 'living our lives' and most of us not in the box you might imagine.  I think it's fair to say that most 'cagers' would find the film interesting exactly because it does shed light on a sociological phenomenon that they know nothing about in the context of a film about a specific family and the family of motorcycle clubs in general.  Peace.

There were a lot more clubs than just the Hessians.  Hells Angels, Bikers for Christ, and other clubs whose names i can't remember.  I went to see the film as a 'non-biker', and what struck me was the sense of comraderie and family they seemed to share.  It was like an unscheduled ride...a reunion of sorts.  What struck me is how old these guys are...where are the young guys?  Or maybe they're not that old, but they sure look it.  I guess that's the old 'rode hard and put away wet' saying in action.  The guys behind us were so busy talking it was hard to hear the film.  "Uh, excuse me fellows, but could you keep it down, I can't hear."  Would that I were brave enough to say something...but didn't want anyone's 'boots' on me!!!  I don't suspect the tough guy/gal image has dimmed much over the years...  But this film is a real love letter to motorcycle clubs and should be seen by anyone who wants to take a peek into this alternative universe.

Motorcycle gangs my ass...it says MC not MG on the back of their cuts.  A brotherhood of bikers who share the same views.  Most clubs if not all participate in annual biker events across the country and around the world.  Most of these events are for charity, to help children, assist the elderly, provide support for families in need to pay medical bills and more.  How many events do you see sponsored by the Crips, Bloods, or MS-13...only thing I have seen them sponsor is tagging a body, a neighborhood and each other..till death do them part.  The safest neighborhood to live in is one that bikers live and associate in..that's a fact.

"motorcyle biker, gang"? Unless you sat in the audience with the ladies and gentlemen that enjoyed this film, please don't place monikers and media labels on them! It is because of the media motorcycle clubs are labeled as gangs. Not everyone that rides in groups are deserving of any title other than biker. So for those of you that don't ride or haven't even seen the movie, SHADDUP! We pay our taxes and go to work, pay our insurance, and house payments just like all good Americans! If you not in the lifestyle or around it don't make naive assumptions, just cause ya saw a movie or read a book.Be real and write real, not trumped up hype!

Is there also not a big difference between the Hessians and the likes of the Hells Angels and Mongols? I was under the impression that the Hessians are more of a Club then the move violent gang side?Could some one be so kind as to explain the difference. I know several HA but have never meet anyone affiliated with the Hessians.

We are an "Outlaw" Motorcycle Club.....The difference between the other such clubs, as you mentioned and us, is the different patches........We are NOT a social, warm & fuzzy group.......If you need anything else.......do your homework, starting with the OC Register < LB press Telegram, LA Times, etc...........I'm sure you'll find out all you want, and more.... :)Hope this helps.......CJ Allan...... nice to see the Hessians out and about. But hasn't I Ride been out for a while? I mean, I saw it at my Brothers place on DVD. Or was this just a celebration that it's finally in an actual theater?

First of all its "Motorcycle CLUB" and second are you in one? Do you know anybody that is in one? Are you just stereo typing because that is all you know how to do? Let me tell YOU......Until you have your FACTS straight keep your ignorant mouth shut!!  I am the proud Ol'Lady of a Hessian Brother and will be for the rest of my EXISTENCE!! I had never "dated" a biker before, always some lame that "thought they were REAL" I have been w/ my Ol'Man going on three years now and have never been SOOOO FKIN happy in my life. My 11 year old daughter has a wonderful life as well that HE SOLELY provides for us. Have Real FRIENDS that would lay down in front of a train for me and not think twice. So before you go bashing "Motorcycle CLUBS" Especially  The Hessians, attend a function or bike week in vegas get to know these what you call motorcycle riding versions of crips bloods etc... and then take a walk downtown Compton and then place your ignorant judgments. I have never met such SOLID people in my life, and no amount of money could ever convince me to live any other way of life than the biker world. Love and Respect to all the brothers and sistas...  Gotta Agree with Dogs ol' Lady. If you ain't been in a club, or around a club, shut your fuc kin mouth. Never compare a bunch of souless ingrate mother fuc kin gang bangers to a MC. MC's are a brotherhood, gangs are a bunch of limp di ck fags who don't know what the hell loyalty is about.
