You may now present me with a gift, my son.

Stumped about what to get dad for Father's Day? Seek inspiration at LACMA's "Gifts of the Sultan" exhibit.

The exhibit, which runs through September 5, shows the emotional, political, and tactical significance of gift-giving at its most painfully overwrought. If you're having a tough time picking out a gift that's not too meaningful, too obligatory, too clichéd, or too Hallmark, this exhibit will make you get down on your knees and thank Allah that you're not an Islamic courtier of the 8th through 19th centuries.
