Gender Bent Justice League is a group of cosplayers who have taken characters associated with DC's Justice League and transformed them into something that is more Rule 63 than it is crossplay.

"A couple of us like to do female versions of preexisting male characters. One of our friends, Psykitten Pow, she had a female Flash," says Tallest Silver, who organized the group and who dresses as Batma'am. "One night, we were all hanging out and I said how funny it would be if we had a whole Justice League with swapped sexes."

Cosplayer Kit Quinn, who has turned up in L.A. Weekly's San Diego Comic-Con photo galleries previously as Dr. Mrs. the Monarch and Slave Leia, took on the role of Superma'am because, Silver says, the two friends have "a great dynamic" and Quinn's hair "has an amazing curl." They brought in their friend Mia Ballistic as Green Lantern because she had a "pinup-y" quality that fit with the era when Hal Jordan came onto the scene.

"All of our personalities connected to a character," says Quinn.

Silver sketched the group with her and her friends as Justice League characters.

"We decided that we needed to make this happen."

Then she started calling her male friends to take on the female roles. Soon, Wonder Man, Power Guy and more joined.

Gender Bent Justice League became more than a group cosplay. It's also a comment on the differences between the costumes associated with male and female superheroes in comic books.

"We try to keep it pretty scantily clad for [the men] because that's how women are portrayed," says Silver. "We weren't scantily clad for ourselves because that's not the point. We're showing that girls can be clothed and be superheroes because, most of the time, they aren't."

Gender Bent Justice League debuted at WonderCon this past April. The response was so good that they decided to take the idea to San Diego.

Flash, the costume that started it all.
"For the most part, everybody loved the idea," says Silver. "They loved the concept. And they loved that the guys were showing some thigh and that the ladies are covered, but we still maintain an aura of sexy."

Right now, Gender Bent Justice League has fourteen members and seems to be growing. In addition to Batma'am, Superma'am and Wonder Man, there are Green Lantern (Halle Jordan, Flash (Wendy West), Aqualass, Green Arrow, Vixen, Power Guy, two Hunters, Martian Maneater and Plastic Lass. There is also a Black Canary who was unable to make it to the con this year and they may have an Atom joining the fold.

You can tell that I'm both geeky & a woman, because my only thought (besides, "Hey, cool!") is "Shouldn't she be "AquaMA'AM" & the female AquaLAD be "AquaLass"? Yeah, yeah, nitpicky - but I'm right! :-)

Actually, as a bit of a queer girl, I usually just say I'm Aquaman! But the group likes to tease me about my prominent behind, so that's why I'm "dat 'Lass" LOL.

It's been done.  Superman/Batman showed us alternate realities and included one where the genders flipped for the main characters.

And one of the reasons why Marvel Comics have gender-legacy characters (She-Hulk, Spiderwoman, X23 (female Wolverine)) is that after a Benny Hill skit showing a woman hulking out, the Marvel lawyers realized they didn't have copyright control of female versions of their heroes so they started making them.

I'm not sure why people keep bringing up that this has "been done" different ways, as if that's somehow a reason that WE shouldn't do our own version...?

How come some of these names are wrong? Should be Superwoman and Batwoman, that's how the female versions are called in the comics.

Thank you for your wonderful costumes.  As a Feminist and Comic Book Lover, I have always been annoyed by the costume disparity between the sexes.

I really love your message and your beautifully crafted costumes. That said, I have been reduced to a slobbering puddle of goo over how hot you all are. Ladies and gentlemen, you are all smoking hot. :) One suggestion - more male skin please. :)

Absolutely amazing, and you should all be proud of what you've done.  Kit/Superma'am brings me all the way back to the golden era, she looks so amazing like she could fit in there just fine.  Power Guy is hotter than Power Girl ever was!

can it be Gender Bending if it's a group that have female and male members? I'm talking abut Green Lantern here, she looks lke one of the background GL's you see when they're on OA, give her red skin she could be Natu

DC has already played with alternate versions of all of these characters, but in our heads, we were adapting the core group of heroes. We've heard a lot of "but there's already a Power Boy/Aqualass/Supergirl/Jesse Quick," but it's not the point - these are our versions of the standards we know and love. Mia Ballistic DEFINITELY did not want to be confused with any other Lanterns! ; )

Why not? If the male members are taking the roles that are officially "female" and vice versa, how is it a problem?

I like to imagine what it would be like to be with Plastic Lass.

As an elder (late 40s) female comic book fan from waaay back, I salute you. The Justice League was my second favorite series (first was The Flash).  It always bugged me that the women were scantily clad while the men were wearing practical fighting garb. (Well, as practical as tights and capes can be...)

If you ever need a Phantom Stranger or Doctor Fate, I'm there!

I see they didn't bend the shoes, LOL. I'd like to see the men fighting supercrime in heels.

Kit Quinn

if we were cross-playing we wouldn't have changed the shoes to heels, but we're doing a sex swapped cosplay, so heels are appropriate for the women.

These are amazing. It's funny how much of a message is sent by costume design.

I'm kind of disturbed how well the female costumes fit on the guys, they looked like plausible characters.

If I looked like Power Guy, I'd go around dressed like that all the time!  Unfortunately for me, I'd look more like Peter Griffin Power Guy.

This is utterly brilliant!  Men showing some thigh and ladies covered.  I love the statement it makes and the reasons behind why you guys are doing this.  Lady characters in comics (and games) are far too scantily cland next to their male compatriots.  There is nothing wrong with showing fom skin, but at least these forms of media should do it with equal opportunity among the sexes.  Thank you guys so much.

Thank YOU for your awesome, thoughtful reply! We love getting into the theory of it! Well, some of us do :D

shouldn't power boy have a onesie on, or is powergirl topless now?

Covering the top of a Power Boy doesn't have the same effect... I think they got it just right, i.e. barely legal.

All above and beyond awesome. Flash is almost better as a female, and I think I have a crush on "Hal Jordan" now ...
