Skulls of the Shogun is one of the finalists at this year's IndieCade Festival
Looking to play some games that haven't hit the market yet? This weekend, you'll have your chance when fourth annual IndieCade, the conference and festival for independent games, takes over Culver City. Though the conference opened on Thursday, IndieCade's public events take place on Saturday and Sunday at various locations on and around Culver Blvd.

IndieCade showcases the work of 36 finalists from across the globe whose work ranges from video to board games and more. Founder and CEO Stephanie Barish says that she has played all of the featured games and is excited at what the developers have to offer.

"I really had a good experience playing them this year because there's definitely a range," she says.

Included in the mix are titles like Kiss Controller, a bowling game controlled by the way a player moves his/her tongue while kissing, Sissy's Magical Ponycore Adventure, created by a five-year-old girl and her father, and Skulls of the Shogun, which we featured in our E3 coverage last year.

This year, IndieCade will be featuring a handful of 3-D mobile games as well.

"We're pretty excited to be on the forefront of mobile 3-D," says Barish.

Last summer, IndieCade held a "3-D game jam," giving developers a chance to work "on a platform that wasn't even released."

The developers were part of twelve teams that participated in the event, with each team coming up with a distinct game. Out of those twelve games, six were selected for the festival. One, Barish says, will win an award.

Barish describes the festival as a "layered event." You can purchase a Conference Pass, a Festival Wristband or attend the free events. A Conference Pass is for gaming professionals and allows access to panels on topics like public relations as well as mixers and other events. Festival Wristband holders can check out workshop sessions like, "Board Game Making/Modding" and "Crowdsource-funding Your Game." Anyone can attend Big Games as well as the GameWalk on Saturday and Sunday for free.

The Big Games portion of IndieCade will focus on games played outside. Some of these games are physical, like Johann Sebastian Joust and Humans vs. Zombies. There are also board games, like Inevitable, and party games, such as Cards Against Humanity, that will be available to play throughout the weekend.

The GameWalk will feature demos available for play at Firestation One, NextSpace and Gregg Fleischman Studio. All IndieCade Festival finalists, including Skulls of the Shogun, which we spotlighted back at E3, will be available at the GameWalk.

My husband took our boys there today, aged 12 years, and they had a great time.  For $10 each (the student rate), my sons received one of those single strapped backpacks filled with goodies (4 packs of Magic cards; a baseball cap; discount cards; and the like).  They also played the human vs. zombie game which was interactive and fun.  They came home from the event really happy about their experience and are already talking about maybe going back again tomorrow.
