How Shahs of Sunset Gets L.A. Iranians All Wrong. And It's Just Bad

Categories: Television

Shahs of Sunset
Bravo's debut on Sunday night of Shahs of Sunset, a reality show following a group of wealthy Iranian Americans from Beverly Hills, was the most tragic attack on Iranians since Alexander the Great left Persepolis in ruins wearing a pleated armor skirt. At the end of what seemed like an hourlong torture, a rampage of disappointed text messages and Facebook status updates followed berating Ryan Seacrest and the vapid, one-dimensional cast.

Shahs seems to have no redeeming qualities for any audience, not just we Iranians. It lacks any originality and is nothing but Seacrest regurgitating old gimmicks to make a buck at another culture's expense.

Really, a tiger at a pool party? What is this, Siegfried and Roy's bar mitzvah? Your family came with "just the clothes on their backs"? Spare audiences the immigrant rags-to-riches sob story. Americans love that myth, but as much we'd like it to be true, it's not. Very few Iranians came here with just the clothes on their backs. The only reality this show has going for it is Reza's mustache (seriously, that thing deserves its own Twitter account).

I have to be fair, though. We do love pillars and our men do have a strange affinity toward their mothers. But Shahs is a steroid version of a reality that's applicable only to an elite group, if even that. We were not naive enough to expect an homage to our race, especially not from Seacrest, but we didn't expect to be outright disparaged -- and bored -- by a group of narcissistic, steroid-mongering rich kids.

But of course, the decent Iranians who occupy Los Angeles would not audition to be a puppet in exchange for 15 minutes of painful fame (if only because it would bring down their chances of marrying to almost impossible levels).

Haven't we suffered plenty? Aren't unibrows and Ahmadinejad enough of a stigma to overcome? Now we have to defend ourselves against new deluded perceptions.

I only hope that as Iranians we do what we do best. No, not insurance fraud. But stick together and not watch Shahs next week just because we want to see someone we recognize from high school. We can do that at Coffee Bean on Westwood and Ohio with far less humiliation.

This show is Like all reality shows. It's shows Up What people will do for money. There are so many races out here that swear They are better than the next but when it boils down to it we all have our good and bad. The only thing that pissed me off was that damn GG her whole character was the definition of Rich snobby bitch. Her attitude always came out if thin air.

I refuse to watch a show that consist of a Zionist Producer named Seacrest and creating a bunch of Sand Niggas and Camel Jockeys posing as Persians/Iranians. Such Zionist propaganda. This show is a representation of usually scripted and paid service to act all bitchy in the name of infamy. It is truly an embarrassment that People who never left their backyards think oh these are Persians and they have money and rich. My family had a conversation about this show and I am glad we do not represent these shallow materialistic people in Beverly Hills.  Its really obvious that most of them are Jews. Its not just LaLa land it paints a bad picture everywhere else where Iranians reside (i.e. Bay Area, Seattle, Lansing/Dearborn area, Atlanta, Indianapolis, Cleveland/Columbus/Toledo, Nashville TN, Austin TX).

Thank god there are Iranians and other people who objects this show...

These people are destroying Persian American's good reputation that has been built up over the years!!  This is really an embarrassment!!! This is the Jersey Shore of LA?!!! that they wanted to produce, and everybody banned it before.  They should stop embarassing themselves, their family and other Iranians.  (Nikki B.)

OMG!!  I  agree with zibby.  what an ugly group and fat. Out of all the reality shows on TV this has got to be the worst, most superficial, most materialistic group of idiots that i have ever seen. I was in stitches watching it.  I always thought that persians were pathetic but now, this show just confirms it

DISAGREE. I really enjoy this show. How are they one-dimentional? Because they're Persian, successful? What? I'd rather see go-getter immigrants than lazy natives. Many other types of immigrant ( which are the most successful as opposed to natural-born citizens) can relate to this show. I can learn something about the war in the late 1970's and the religion, so hate on the show all you want, many people enjoy it. Asa has some good music btw

What are you talking about immigrants are more successful than natural born citizens ? I will not deny that some immigrants work very hard once they get here but take your head out of your ass if you think Americans don't do the same. I guess Steve jobs, bill gates, and warren buffet have just been sitting on their native asses and collecting a check right ?

Plenty of Iranians came here with just the clothes on their back because their suitcases were filled with CASH.  Seriously, the cast on this show is proof that inbreeding is bad for beauty.  I didn't watch the entire show (much better TV on at that time), but I heard from someone who did and she said that the grandmother on the show (not sure who it is) works at one of the retail stores in the city.  Once the show is cancelled, I hope that these guys invest their money and get a chance to experience real money.  At least, get some work done on those faces.....please.  Far too many plastic surgeons in LA for anyone to look like that any more.

How Shahs of Sunset Gets L.A. Iranians All Wrong. And It's Just BadAlthough I did not waste my my time to watch this show. But I hope someone would tell Movie producer or BRAVO TV STATION, that those scomback are not the majority of our community. Iranian are the number one foregn students in the universities around USA who have the highest number of students in higher education system. One my own family although I got married at age 19. My children one is MD doctor onefinished in SUSF the youngest is in USC. My niece who lived with us till she got married and left is a Lawer and partner in a national Firm.Or, my nieces & Nephews the same highly Educated with PhD  or Doctral degrees from UCLA , USC. We have in the community who donate hundreds of thousandsto Hospitals and or universities. And of course there are Loosers such as Actors & acteros of Shah of Sunset.

Is telling jokes illegal in Iran or something?  As a part-time comic and student of comedy, this show made me feel sorry for the production crew.  There isn't one sharp wit or interesting thought in that entire cast.  Painfully unfunny.  I'd be amazed if Shahs gets a second season.

I thought the show was funny and semi-entertaining. And NO, I do not believe all Iranians/Iranian-Americans are rich and behave like these people. I KNOW THAT. I'm black and I don't go yelling and ranting every time an idiot rapper goes on TV with a million dollars in diamonds sculpted into some cartoon character and drops the ever-so-offensive N-bomb 7000 times on a CD and is basically a complete embarrassment. I'd just have to HOPE, like the 'regular' Iranian-Americans do that people won't believe that they're all like that.

And why is anyone surprised about what is on TV?? Networks are there to make money - not bring enlightenment, education, or teach us morals!! This will make money! Therefore, it is on TV. If they actually cared what they exposed us to I wouldn't STILL see Kim K's fucking face on TV!!!!P.S. - Mike is completely and utterly hot.

I agree. I liked it (my demographic is white anglo descended southerner). I am really surprised at the negative press. The Real Housewives of Orange County doesn't represent all Housewives, housewives in Orange County, and some of them are not even housewives. Viewers know this is a subset of a culture and at this point I believe it's good exposure for those outside the community, the crass materialism is there because Bravo won't do a show without it, it's a Bravo thing. Just hearing the word Persian fifty times in an hour is a good enlightening thing to have happen on a primetime tv show. Hearing Farsi spoken in snippets in a poolside cat-fight in a light hearted show...same. Even if the glitz and glam is a sideways way to enlighten people culturally then I think it's worth it, and can do some good.

I get that Bravo is all about sensationalism but this show was so fake that you could tell the producers were coaching the cast.  Reality tv should have some basis in reality but there is absolutely none here except for the one girl's mom.  Everything else was completely staged and over produced and it was obvious.

The one "hot" girl seemed liked she had rehearsed her bitchy lines and neck whips for months before taping.  The producers weren't able to find actual characters to cast this show so they went with boring people who are trying super hard to be characters.  Ultimately that is the show's downfall.

WestiKoooni
WestiKoooni

I liked the show, it's not supposed to be showing the reality because reality is boring. Yes they can show the daily lives of Iranian surgeons and top Engineers but who's gonna watch that?!!?What I did not like was the fact that they seemed to have picked a bunch of mostly Jews to represent Persians and that's not realistic. These folks came here with a lot of money, don't believe them a minute if they say otherwise. And these Persian Jews don't even have a good reputation amongst other Jews in LA which says a lot about them. But overall, I like the show and will watch it...GG is a beach and Reza is too much!!!!

Hey kooni, I wish we left with money. We had money, yes. But your cousins confiscated everything, just like in nazi germany and so we had to leave with very little. Very little. Thankfully, we were always educated, hard working and smart so within a couple of generations we are back on top. How are the iranians doing after a couple of generations? As far as the show goes, welcome to Los Angeles. These schmucks are no different than most in L.A. The Persian community is overly materialistic - no one can deny that (especially the woman) and the men are too busy trying to make money so that they can get these woman... silly cycle.

Are there a "race" of Iranians? Last time I checked, there is no such thing as a "pure" anything, and certainly not a genetically pure, same blooded human animal running around...what the author here is trying to say is "culture". It may shock some Persians to learn that their...ahem...blood is quite similar to many other people living in the Middle East, and that genetically, they could pass for any number of 100's of things...

What this show is about is laughing at, and celebrating stereotypes of stereotypes. Living 3 blocks from Westwood Blvd, I can say that some of the cast of the show pale in comparison with a number of characters around. But all in all, the Persian community in LA is great, down to earth, fun, intellectual and strong contributors to a renewed entrepreneurial American spirit. And their women and food kick ass. Actually, I have found the whole community to be very warm, friendly and kind to me. So this show is not doing any favors to this wonderful culture.

This is indeed the Jersey Shore of Beverly Hills, and it's another example of lack of ideas, and classless stupidity of what Hollywood has turned into. I can certainly laugh at it, but for the average American who gets his facts of life from TV...well I fear for their fragile little minds...But considering the decadent, hedonistic, mental infancy of most of the country these days...from Ed Hardy to Reality TV...Shahs of Sunset is just a symptom of a much greater problem...the Decline and Fall of the American Republic...be on the lookout for China and while you're at it..."charge this to my Daddy"

An absolute disgraceto the Persian Community, this show is based on classless and uneducated group, which is a complete misrepresentation of the Iranian immigrant population inthe United States.  Fact, according tothe census data available, more than one in four Iranian-Americans holds amaster's or doctoral degree, the highest rate among 67 ethnic groups studied. With the Iranian American’s high level of educational attainment and a medianfamily income 20 percent higher than the national average  and number of them holding top executiveleadership positions in fortune 500 companies it is unlikely that these peopleare what our community represent. Clearly, this show is not representing whatthe true Persian community in this country represents and in such sensitivepolitical climate such the current one people like Ryan Secreast should be amore responsible person.  Perhaps heneeds new advisor, where they aren’t shortsighted to the immediate commercial success, but perhaps the longterm blemish decisions can have from fan following.  Amazingly how the media in this country is soimprudently  and driven by virtually bythe number of dollars projected in short term, exploiting a family like theKardashian’s is one thing, clearly it was a decision by them, to misuse anentire community is another and just wrong.

I watched it last night.  I cannot believe how desperate and uncreative tv producers have become.  Whatever happened to good entertainment.   I will never watch this show again.  It made me puke.   I know plenty of rich Iranians in LA but they are all educated, care for community,  and NO image is not everything.   This show must be stopped.  Yuk!

From what I could see, the show was divided half and half between Muslim Iranians and Jewish Iranians. Is M.J. definitely Muslim? It seemed ambiguous to me.  Also the two a-holes, Mike and G.G. were also divided equally, Jew and Muslim. "I'm sn alpha msle"...."we don't work in buildings we own them"....whatever, dude......i was trying to gauge his height...he reminds of the short, juiced-up muscle trolls i see at my gym from time to time. As for G.G., I wonder if she realises how hated she has become in so short s time. If I had any sympathy for her i would feel badly for her. But I don't have any, you see. All in all the show kicks butt, extremely entertaining, Llighten up haters, it's just GOOD garbage tv. Huge opening night, ratings -wise- I predict a hit, and I hope it blows away that  odious stinkbomb of a family known as the Kardashians.

These Persian Angelenos didn't have to appear in this disgusting show. It's worse than Jersey Shore. They are ignorant and classless. I feel for the LA Persians! But YOU NEED TO TALK TO YOUR COMMUNITY! They are willing to portray themselves as lowlifes....Sad sad sad....
