The Rambo movies weren't always standard-issue action. One need look no further for proof than First Blood, the first entry in the series--not to mention the only one directed by Ted Kotcheff, whose Wake in Fright enjoyed a deserved revival this fall after four decades of relative obscurity. Sylvester Stallone has rarely if ever been better than he is here, with his damaged-but-still-badass performance lending the film much of its emotional and dramatic weight. Cinefamily is playing it throughout the week, so get an early start to the weekend tonight at 9:45 p.m.
Friday, December 28
If you've still never seen Lawrence of Arabia, allay your guilt at the Egyptian tonight at 7:30 p.m. Celebrating its 50-year anniversary, David Lean's epic remains as, well, epic as ever. It's being projected digitally (ho hum), but film historian/author Jeremy Arnold will be present to introduce the film and drop some knowledge.
Saturday, December 29
Two screwball classics at the Aero: Frank Capra's It Happened One Night -- which in 1935 became the first film to win all five major Oscars -- and George Cukor's Holiday. Between the romantic pairing of Claudette Colbert/Clark Gable in the former and Katherine Hepburn/Cary Grant in the latter, you could hardly ask for more glorious stars in a single evening.
Sunday, December 30
If two back-to-back screwball comedies just aren't enough for you, then perhaps all three original Indiana Jones movies (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom and The Last Crusade) at the Egyptian will be. Don't forget your whip and fedora.
