Octuplets' Mom Named
A mother of eight newborns who remain at a Bellflower Kaiser Permanente hospital lives in Whittier, and her name is Nadya Suleman. Late Friday afternoon, the City News Service revealed, "Although the woman has asked that her identity not be released, she was identified in various media reports as Nadya Suleman or Nadya Suleman Gutierrez, a 33-year-old divorcee."
By today, a gathering storm of controversy has focused on why Suleman, who already has six children, would, as has been reported, seek in vitro treatment to give multiple births. Today's L.A. Times quoted Suleman's mother, Angela Suleman, as claiming her daughter simply wanted one more daughter:
"Suleman stressed that her daughter 'is not evil, but she is obsessed with children. She loves children, she is very good with children, but obviously she overdid herself.'"
The Associated Press reports that Nadya Suleman used embryos frozen from previous conceptions. The AP quoted her mother on the finality of these latest births:
"She doesn't have any more (frozen embryos), so it's over now," she said. "It has to be."
