  • Helmet Rule Ignored? A police officers' union is suing the LAPD and its chief, Bill Bratton, accusing both of violating the department's own safety policies. The case is part of the spreading controversy over orders that kept cops from donning riot helmets before a January 10 protest in Westwood. L.A. Times

  • Homeowner Holdouts v. LAUSD Three Sylmar homeowners are resisting school district efforts to buy them out to make way for a K-8 school. The residents are digging in, charging the district is taking advantage of historic lows in the housing market to offer them cheap buyouts. L.A. Daily News

  • Port Gridlock Expected to Ease Wednesday's massive gridlock of port-bound trucks, that produced lines of vehicles that spilled out from L.A. and Long Beach Harbors onto the Gerald Desmond Bridge, is not expected to be repeated today. The long lines of idling trucks formed on the first day drivers were required to display RFID tags proving they'd  paid a new clean-air fee. Long Beach Press-Telegram

  • Earl Scheib to Keep Name The Sherman Oaks-based chain of paint-and-body-repair shops, whose acquisition by a private equity firm was announced Wednesday, will retain its iconic name. Scheib, founded in 1937, operates 85 shops in 77 cities. L.A. Business Journal

  • Albertsons to Shutter Nine Marts "Attention, shoppers: This store is closing in 10 minutes -- forever." This may well be the announcement heard at nine SoCal supermarkets soon, as Albertsons tries to deal with a recession-shrunk customer base. Area chains Ralphs and Vons are also downsizing. L.A. Times

  • Spector Jurors Get Death Mansion Tour For the second time in as many years, a jury today will visit music producer Phil Spector's Alhambra mansion. Spector's retrial jurors will be able to see the spot where actress Lana Clarkson died of a disputed gunshot in 2003. Spector is accused of shooting Clarkson. Associated Press
