Weiss & Trutanich Spar Again . . . and Again

Weiss cant even get the vote of his own constituents, but he is trying to fool the rest of LA into voting for him? No thanks. If racist hypocrites like you are the people who support him, then it only affirms what I already knew. He has no business being an elected official in ANY capacity.

• It's easy to make the case for Carmen "Nuch" Trutanich: He's an experienced and capable outsider running against the lazy and ineffective Jack Weiss who will stooge for the mayor's political machine that has ill-served the city and its people.

• In the world of thug politics, Trutanich wins. Jack Weiss' appearance this morning on a local TV news program was eloquent and reassuring as why he will make the best City Attorney. Trutanich's no show said it all. As far as Trutanich putting his desperatation on the backs of his minions to pressure Janice Hahn for an endorsement of him, that too says it all. If she thought he was the better candidate, she would have said so. To all level headed voters, it appears as if she is not officially endorsing Weiss as not to disparage Trutantich. That's respect. That's class.

• Most candidates wait until after the election to break their campaign promises. But Trutanich is already breaking his. He claims that he will enforce the ordinances against illegal signs. Yet he is using illegal signs in his campaign; one is parked on the street in my neighborhood right now.

• And by the way most cops weren't even consulted on who to endorse -- that's a decision made by a right-wing clique headed by Paul Weber, whom you, your Kevin James, Zine and rightwingers must love but who the majority in L A disagree with. They see Weiss as being in sync with their values. Weber/Zine are also in a battle against Chief Bratton, which is why they'd like to elect the Chief to make him one of themselves, and push in that very insidious and ill-thought-out Jamiel's Law or Zine's useless "motion." I've heard Weber and Zine on rightwing radio say as much. That's why the Times editorialized last month that Weber has made the union "cynical and corrupt." So we've got the highly intelligent, educated Chief Bratton and Weiss, opposed by a street-wise/book-foolish Zine/Weber and their ilk. Who have their place and function. But I know who I'd trust to interpret and enforce my laws.

• Well, Cindy, obviously you don't read the LA Times and other sources because anti-semitism is the main reason Trutanich gave for chickening out. Plus his mouthpiece/ alter-ego David Berger does so everywhere too... You're right to imply that it's too absurd to believe however, but Trutanich does whatever he can and says anything to anyone to get what he wants. He's spent the last 23 years lining his pockets disdaining public service (and still says he does every chance he gets, a fine attitude toward the people he'd have to be working with) and profiting himself. Also playing both sides of the door when he worked for both Rocky's office AND his criminal clients, huge documented conflicts of interest. I hope more of that stuff starts to leak out, too. When anyone who's known him over the years found out he's actually got the nerve to run for City Attorney and the spin he's putting on himself, they couldn't believe it. • I was at the debate and know that Trutanich never said that Weiss is anti-semitic! I even recorded everything that Trutanich had to say. Margaret is a liar just like Weiss! I have friends that work in Public Safety Police Recruitment, and they disdain Weiss! Weiss was disgusting when he made the tv commercial claiming that he did so much to get the rape kits looked into. It was Kevin James and the women's organization involved in that that went to City Hall last fall to put pressure on Weiss and Public Safety, because the rape kit sitution was so back logged! I hardly believe the mayor cares about the employees of the City of L.A., when just last year he tried to get rid of "seniority", but the unions have a contract protecting it. The mayor called older employees "Deadwood"...he endorses Weiss...and I'll bet that Weiss has the same view of older employees. So much for all the years of anti-discrimination wars and achievement and equality for all! The unions tell the city employees that they have not even been told a word about the hype the mayor is giving the media regarding potential layoffs and the alternative options that employees must take or expect layoffs. Trutanich is an honest man, experienced lawyer and is endorsed by a long list of credible sources. The public will decide based on that alone. Take a nice long soak in a hot tub Margaret!

• Here he is on cue, bitter former candidate David Berger who went to every "debate" spewing vitriol and how much he "hates" Weiss, like he hates Latinos and a host of other people. He and running mate Walter Moore scared up the haters of all kinds, with scare-mongering, lies and paranoia and slime tactics. As for the rat, it was brought by a union whose strike Trutanich busted a few years ago and they want people to know it. Rats are traditional symbols of union busting, which Berger would know if he wasn't an angry Brit fleeing the Pakis who just arrived on our shores and attended law school a decade ago, but now presumes to spread his hatred here. That rat had nothing to do with the Weiss campaign. However, the Trutanich "team" brought a loud boombox blasting anti-Weiss "songs" and because it was so loud and was illegally plugged into someone's private property without permission, the cops made them remove it. Trutanich did nothing but scream lies at Weiss and tried to deny his own words read back to him. When he saw his usual tactics of lies and smears weren't working, he tried to claim like mouthpiece David Berger here that Weiss is anti-semitic -- Weiss who's Jewish and known as perhaps the staunchest defender of Jewish institutions on the Council. But this opportunistic amoral ploy also backfired on Trutanich so he's claiming he won't do any further "debates" unless they're rigged by his supporters like the westside ones he and Berger attended.

• The Weiss campaign arrived at the LALCV debate with a large rat. No, it wasn't Jack Weiss, it was another rat; an inflatable one. For "Margaret" or "Natalia," or whatever phony name Ace uses to plant bogus posts, to suggest that Jack Weiss is 'taking the high ground' is typical of the dishonest and disgusting record of deception practiced by Jack Weiss for the past 8 years as a council member. Oh, and public service is a crime when Jack Weiss takes money laundered campaign donations. He tried to shrug that off by saying it was "dealt with years ago" but the fact is Weiss still has not repaid the illegal contributions. How can a man stand for law and order and openly violate the law? Weiss hiding the fact that one of his last duties as a member of the City Council will be to decide on whether a developer who is holding a fundraiser for him, can go ahead with another high-density development. Come on LA, we cannot afford to have Weiss as City Attorney.

• Wow!!!! Margaret, you had time to write all that? Ace Smith must pay you by the word!!! Weiss was absent from counsel 38% of the time, and you're trying to spin it as he does not "waste time." Nice!

• "Margaret" is obviously working for the Jerk Weiss campaign. They always double-post; it's their trademark. Trutanich was endorsed by BOTH LA daily papers, the LA Times and the Daily News. Weiss should be a lobbyist for developers, billboard companies, and the other special interests that he helps on a regular basis. The last thing we want is for him to be the City's chief legal advisor. Now it's time to rip the LA Weekly writer for not having his facts straight: Mr. Mirkulan, it's not just high density and gridlock, it's the excessive heights, excessive massing/size/FARs (floor area ratios), reduced setbacks. He supports these developers because they bundle contributions for him. Those contributions are like legalized bribes. Not all of his constituents live on the "Westside"; many of them live in the Valley (Council District 5 is large) and they hate him, too. It sounds like you're a broke Eastside renter (aren't most journalists broke...don't let it make you bitter) who is jealous of people that live in a better neighborhood than yours and are simply trying to protect it...get over the jealousy and envy; it's not healthy. Labor is backing Weiss, because he's been too good to the City employee unions, which is why the City is facing major financial problems that will lead to (possible bankruptcy) further cuts in basic services and higher taxes, fees, and penalties. Weiss has a lot of power and he uses it to get contributions and endorsements, which is unethical. If Weiss calls you and asks for a contribution or an endorsement, and you say No, he'll screw you. That's why we need campaign finance reform. Also, Weiss is backed by the Mayor, and the unions love the Mayor, because he's been giving them whatever they want. Laura Chick supports Trutanich because Weiss is a slimeball, and she's been around City Hall long enough to know it. Weiss is in the pocket of developers, and Brazeman is fighting an SB 1818 project that will destroy his neighborhood. He actually went pretty soft on Weiss in the ad. What's more significant is that "regular folks" need to and are willing to lay out that kind of money to fight their own Councilmember, who is supposed to represent the residents of the District, not special interests like big developers. LA Observed is also in love with Eric Garcetti, who is in bed with developers and other special interests, and is a colossal jerk. • What bothers me most about Trutanich is that he lies about his own record and Weiss's, running on what he did briefly way back in the 80's in terms of the environment and fighting gangs, yet calls himself an "environmental lawyer" in election mailers. Not divulging his client list, with a history of conflicts of interest to boot, hiding behind attorney-client privilege, just adds to the untrustworthy image I have of him. I was also put off by the nastiness and low-class nature of his attacks on Weiss in his mailings, and right in his own website snarkily hidden under "initiatives." I just plain don't want this guy at City Hall. As a westsider I'm disgusted with his pretending to care about our issues and traffic when he barely moved into the city at all, to San Pedro from Long Beach and his own alma mater NeonTommy quotes him saying he wants to shift the balance of power at City Hall away from the westside/downtown/Hollywood usual crowd to the South Bay. A reporter hears him urging a supporter with ties to Janice Hahn to get her to help him do that, and also "for payback for her brother." This is an ambitious guy who's never even served on a commission let alone ran for office, and claims to disdain it -- yet his own website calls himself "California's Hottest Politician." A shady, shifty amoral character and ham actor. Finally the Weiss camp is fighting back much as they tried to maintain the high road. As for the absences, that's a non-issue since all Councilmembers prioritize other business as necessary, as long as they're excused and a quorum remains on council. I saw a list of absences once and as there were others at the top. Plus Weiss is among those who waste least time on those Friday presentations and the calligraphy proclamations that go along with it. His propensity not to waste time and speak his mind might have ruffled feathers on Council but those traits mean he'll be independent as a City Attorney as he's been. As for the small band of people who have fought him over everything and are backing Nuch (most of his talking points come straight from their websites and flyers), much as we all would like to have zero development as homeowners, that's just dumb from a legislative viewpoint. We need tax revenue, and the projects he's approved are "high=class" and high-end true "green" and "smart" growth. Heralded by chambbers of commerce and architectural societies alike. His office has worked diligently to broker compromise with homeowner groups but some want NO development, period, and admit it, like chief opponent Mike Eveloff. He says no development til we get all the revamped infrastructure to handle it, but where does he think we'll get the money without any development? Meanwhile Bill Rosendahl's always yelling about how Santa Monica keeps building job magnets, but the westside gets the drive-through traffic anyway. Hello, yes. Yet they put up every roadblock to Pico-Olympic, which a RAND study corroborated by FAST singles out as just the right kind of short-term fix. Zev Yaroslavsky (who first proposed a more radical notion) was quoted in L A Downtown News saying that some Homeowner Groups "would continue to oppose everything until we're in total gridlock in 10 years." Of course, he also caved in to these people and their predecessors in scotching the subway "to the sea" while the feds were throwing money for such projects at every other city. Of course these same people are opposed to subway and Expo stops along Pico or Olympic where they're most needed, insisting the lines run much further south. Trutanich parrots their views as though he gives a damn, but sincere convictions or lack of it have never played a role in his career. THESE are the people fighting Weiss and if you consider that having a vision for the westside and city beyond sheer "say no to everything" is the best way to move L A into the 21-st C., then I think there are a lot of positive reasons to vote for Weiss. (That's an angle I see Kortez starting to use against Vahedi in the CD5 election.) Nuch's phony-chumminess turns my stomach, knowing what's behind it. Then there's Weiss's steadfast work on issues like anti-terrorism, working with law enforcement agencies of all kinds, as well as LAPD, the DNA rape evidence kits and work with guns, gangs and the environment... Public Service is NOT a crime, like Nuch keeps saying (what kind of message does that send to young people? The opposite of what most of the country is feeling I think). Lining your pockets to work for the rich scum of the earth and teaching them how to defy the law is NOT somehow a more noble cause. I can't think of a single positive reason to vote for Trutanich. (Now I fully expect to see "Phred"/ David Berger jumping in to attack Weiss on the usual points. Yes I too will be glad to see these debates finally draw to a close.) -- not sure if previous will post, if so pls. delete this one.
