UPDATE with photo of LAPD Detective Stephanie Lazarus. Accused of murder, she was featured in LA Weekly People Issue

• YOUR ARE CORRECT! RIGHT ON THE MONEY! try living with one. I have a 20 year story ongoing that no one could simply make up. Every morning it haunts me. Its like ground-hog day. It was not until the unforeseen split is it hitting me in detail. So yes. Your are so correct and the eyes are very telling when the outer personality is not over shadowing it, something I observed over and over and over.

• Sociopathic personalities are also diabolically intelligent, so much so that they fool all the people around them except that one person who ultimately becomes the victim of the sociopath for fear of exposing s/he.

• Sorry all, adding on to my own prior message. Remember also: Ms. Lazarus reported a 38 caliber gun stolen exactly 13 days following the murder of Ms. Rasmussen. Also, according to LAPD personelr ecords, Ms. Lazarus took a "personal/sick leave" day on 02/24/86, the same day Ms. Rasmussen was murdered. Convenient or coincidence? A jury will want answers to such questions! Just because two decades pass by and detective Lazarus has been noted as a "top notch" cop with her involvement in the DARE program, working with "at risk" youth, etc, does not mean she was uninvolved in a crime 23 years prior. I found it interesting during Ms. Lazarus interview she "corrected" detective Jaramillo regarding the pronunction of her ex-boyfriend's name; which she says is "rutten", not "ruuten", as detective Jaramillo incorrectly pronounced. Regardless of the trial outcome, I hope and pray she has the fortitude and strength to be totally honest about her involvement with Mr. Ruetten and the victim, Ms. Rasmussen. Note, during her interview she claims Mr. Ruetten were only "acquaintences", when clearly they dated during their college years @UCLA, as evidenced by others and her own words Ms. Lazarus journal [seized during search warrant 06/09. Now matter how many years I counsel people, what I will never understand, is how anyone cannot have the forethought of how many lives (besides their own) would be ruined, and how can one think any prior lover would want them after coming home to find their beloved spouse brutally murdered on the floor?

• It's always incredibly sad for family on both sides with an arrest of a loved one. Innocent until proven guilty is a concept we hold true in America. As an individual w/personal experience of murder, this concept means every defendent has the right to a fair trial, representation and presentation of the facts. This concept does not mean we abate the gathering of facts. It's incredibly hard to imagine someone we know, love and respect could be capable of murder. Denial is in control here: i.e., As a senior in 1986, a classmate of mine comitted rape/murder to my neighbor. After this experience, I'm convinced "we" could have seen my classmate commit this crime on film and still not believed he was responsible. Denial is that strong. So, I went to [his] trial, and ironically, the bitemark on the victim matched my classmate's DNA and dental records, amongst other awful incriminating evidence. My classmate ended up on death row. Coming from from a family of law enforcement, I learned full well that officers are "human" and not infallible. We are all equal as human  beings, and all very capable of murder. Thus far, what is apalling is the fact the LAPD drpped the ball bigtime. Stephanie Lazarus should have been interviewed asap, along with the 4 other women listed as "persons of interest". This simple step could have eliminated or exonerated Ms. Lazarus. In terms of burglary, how many of us have heard of only a marriage certificate and engagement gift [1985 BMW 318i] from Mr. Ruetten, the victim's husband being stolen? The victim, Ms. Rasmussen made several calls to her father Nels and co-workers about Ms. Lazarus "stalking" her, "threatening" her, to the point of Ms. Rassmussen being afread for her life and/or well-being. If Ms. Lazarus was not stalking the victim, then how did she know Ms. Rasmussen would be home Monday 02/24/86, when the victime had only called into work shortly before her husband, Mr. Ruetten left for work @0720am? [see autopsy] Who brings a gun to an argument? The victim had previously alleged she came home days before her murder only to find Ms. Lazarus had broken into her condo to confront her about her husband "John". Ms. Lazarus own words in her journal and to a co-worker indicate how "obsessed" she was with the victim's husband, Mr. Ruetten and assessing her own mental state/levele of concentration as being "negative-10". The victim, Sherri Rasmussen, was beaten severely before being shot 3x's in the chest [see autopsy]. Make know mistake, the victime @6', 0", 150lbs, home "sick" w/a strained back fought, fought hard for her life. Your dear friend, has some explaining to do. I only wish, forensically, the LAPD investigators had taken dental imprints of the bite mark on the victim. Because of the DNA package being "torn" from long-term impacted storage, it may get exluded. Regardless of all the "good" Ms. Lazarus did as a cop, it will never make up for [allegedly] beating someone and then shooting someone point blank range in the chest. I look forward to the trial and sincerely hope Ms. Lazarus will take the stand as her legal right to defend herself.

Her friends and people in her life have ALOT to process,that they had one i n their lives. • I've read everything available on this case and the media coverage is going to be intense. The odds are one in over 400 quadrillion that this crime was committed by another person. Lazarus stacked stereo equipment near the body and attempted to stage the scene to appear as a burglary. Several weeks later she reported her service revolver stolen. Two men who committed a robbery in the area were blamed for the crime. Anyone know if they were ever prosecuted and imprisoned? That would be additional lives ruined. This cop is a sociopath. The victim, a critical care nurse, was tied up and tortured before she was shot three times. Anyone attempting to soften the evidence, or suggest this was a case of "youthful heartbreak" is delusional or another cop. For once try not defending the indefensible just because they're a member of your organization. You might actually gain some respect in the process. I will say after watching the interrogation the two cops did a great job. Watching Lazarus nearly have a breakdown during it was much more frightening than her eyes.

• I'm so over people saying this woman was such a nice lady and cop,she was not! She actualy had another side that she hid well,most of us are shaking our head in disbelief that she fooled so many people for so long! We all know she did it people come on! You can defend her all you want but because she was a cop she deserves more than the book thrown at her,she abused her power and tarnished the badge!She was a murderous tart and I feel sorry for Scott,so do alot of us! • I have known Stephanie for a while. I used to do things with her and always found her to be a very good person. I worked for LAPD as a civilian and I always saw that she treated civilians with the same respect she treated sworn, as is not always the case. I do not know what happened in that apt. I wasn't there. Who knows what the husband did to make her think there was still a chance for them. What happen's to Steph in the future is in the hands of fate. But, I will always be a friend to her as she was to me.

• My family was close friends with the Rasussins when we were growing up....I would like everyone to know what a incredibly loving, honest, caring, Christian she was! To this day I am horrified that ANYONE would ever want to hurt this BEAUTIFUL and SWEET young woman! She was always so kind and gentle and I remember that she was sooo STRIKINGLY BEAUTIFUL. She was raised in the 7th Day Adventist Church and working in the Nursing field, she obviously was still serving the people of her community and her God. • After watching the 48 Hours show, it does seem that the evidence is quiet damaging. If I were a juror, I would definitely say she is guilty. Obsessity, not love, makes people do crazy things and noone is above sin. Just remember, she might have gotten away with it for all these years, and she may get away with it for the next 23 years and never loose sleep over it, but there is 1 crucifier she can't escape if she's guilty...and that's the Good MAN upstairs. Her day is coming and she will pay for this if she did it!

• Seems odd that her dna would be on the victum via bite mark. Can't imagine how my dna would be on a dead person though a bite mark unless I was involved. Don't know this woman, but if she broke in my house, I probably would die of a massive heart attack after looking into those evil eyeballs!!

• I think Stephanie Lazarus' eyes are reminiscent of the "runaway bride"- it looks like Graves Disease to me (thyroid). My guess is that the husband felt incredibly guilty that his ex-girlfriend caused his wife's death and he couldn't deal with it, and disappeared. Lastly, as the sister of a homicide victim, you can't know the damage and grief this causes in a family unless you've been through it. It's pretty upsetting to hear defense attorneys make excuses (or in the case of Johnny Cochrane, making a mockery of murder), and also, it's upsetting for us to hear people making excuses for the defendant in cases where the violence is extreme. If someone could commit this crime and go on with his or her life as if nothing happened; then that is extremely cold and conscience-free. I saw on 48 Hours that the death penalty was taken off the table.

• I personally think she is guilty but do believe we are all innocent until proven we aren't. The thing is that on 48 Hours her lawyer said that the envelope had a tear in it with the DNA tube hanging out of it a bit. Which leaves that evidence questionable. Ever since the OJ trial I question anything that happens in LA. I mean that jury let a murderer go!!!! ANd there was tons more evidence in that trial than this one so they will probably let her go. Heck, they even let Robert Blake go too. So not only is OJ and Robert Blake both out there free and both murders but she probably will be too, so don't be surprised if she is freed.

• So glad there is no statute of limitations for murder and congrats to the cold case detectives. Hope there's a 48 hours update next year when the trial is over since I'm curious on what the prosecution and defense do in court.

• I've got no reason to judge her since I don't know her. Only watched her on 48hrs on tv. But since theirs a DNA evidence pointing her as a prime suspect, then it seemed likely that she's really guilty. The truth will always comes out no matter how much one hides it. • Traci, I'm not trying to be a detective and not sure if I read about the gun before or after but I know I did and do not remember if it stated the caliber of the bullet which most probably could be used in many types of guns. I don't know, I do not own a gun. Without the actual murder weapon the caliber I would think would be circumstantial. At this point everything that I have read or heard is circumstantial, even the DNA. They could have had a fight away from the condo, she took the marriage license from Sherri during the fight away from the condo, her gun was actually stolen which happens to be of the same caliber....perhaps by someone close to her at the time and actual used and so on. I am just wondering what the defense is going to be and the way it looks they can cast and argue reasonable doubt unless the actual gun is found trace to her or someone can place her in the general proximity at the time of the murder. • The original Detectives belong in jail as well. Their SHODDY and incopetent police work along with their callous treatment of the victim's family are enough for these "retired" scumbags to be in jail with her. Darryl Gates is also to blame, he as head of the LAPD in the 80's (for those of us who remember him) was a huge crook, liar and arrogant SOB who let many cops get away with murder. • I might turn out the two had a catfight because the victim showed the perpetrator the marriage license and she did take it from her. Could be that�s why she did not go the work that day. Perhaps latter that day the victim confront the spouse about perhaps about a still ongoing affair with the alleged perpetrator and he......... or she was truly killed by burglars� what timing that would have been. I guess we will see what line the defense will be. This is a great tragedy and everyone is a loser here.

• I may turnout that the two females got into a fight after the victim showed the pepatrator the marriage license to show that the ex and she are married. Might be the reason she did not go to work. Romantically scorned two year beat cop, Officer Lazarus, was an armed and unwanted intruder in the residence of her romantic rival, who was a highly educated medical director with a regional hospital. An "assailant" who Officer Lazarus had previously openly threatened. As Officer Lazarus fought with and beat up this "assailant" while sustaining little damage herself, she needed to bite the "assailant" right on the ta ta's. And then she needed to pump at least three shots into that unarmed "assailant" in order to "finally subdue" her. However, Officer Lazarus also needed to remove the marriage certificate of her ex-lover and the victim from the crime scene! There's somebody around here that is not real! And all some others can say is that it's very damn obvious that someone is real concerned about something, and it's NOT truth and justice! Sure LAPD Detective Lazarus should, and will, get her "due process". But LAPD Detective S. Lazarus is as guilty as sin of capital murder in the commission of a felony. But some "Hollywood types" must live completely over the edge all the time! Detective Lazarus had the motive, the opportunity, the means, and additionally she has "the profile". And besides the overwhelming evidence in this case, one of the first things any self respecting Eastern "big city" detective would notice was the "crazy eyes". But maybe, since nuts is "normal" in L.A., somebody else wouldn't. And that Lazarus had convinced herself that she would never get nailed!

• Reality. Quiet Joe. Stop calling people asses. What are you a control freak or a dictator of intolerance? She's guilty, period. DNA does not lie and she had the motive of jealousy and hate, opportunity and the cold heart. In my mind I have convicted her regardless of formality. Her life is basically over which is sad for her 2 yr. old and anyone who may love her. A cell is no place to be for even one hour much less the rest of your life.OJ is a living example of misery as he sits in Lovelock Prison in Nevada. The cops finally did the job that Gates did not. Still, most murders are not solved. Try and enjoy the day and be more tolerant and forgiving and think often of God.

• A real shock to me. I grew up with Stephanie. Went to school with her. She was always a good kid: A-B student, active in sports, always cheerful. Knew her mother and sister well too. I doubt if it was premeditated. Probably an argument which turned violent.

• Let's not forget Sheri. I knew her when she worked at UCLA Medical Center. She was a wonderful and caring nurse and decent human being. Her murder was a horrifying shock. The world was diminished by her death. If this woman did indeed beat, bite, and shoot her, then she deserves all that justice can serve.

• Any person who is so angry and jealous that they resort to repeatedly biting another human being and then taking out a pistol and killing that person should be executed. It is true, she hasn't been convicted; however, we all know that she is guilty ... dna doesn't 'fib' ... it is an accurate and telling technology ... telling the final truth about the frightening event causing the cruel murder of a seemingly perfectly normal and nice lady. This murderer simply has close set eyes ... having nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that she is clearly a sociopath who should not be free to perhaps become enraged over some other event and behaving in a likewise manner. It is appropriate under certain circumstances to execute a person ... as barbaric as it seems ... yet, I can't think of a more appropriate reason to do so. She doesn't deserve to be alive.

• I am not an American and I do not live in the USA but to judge people from a simple photo you cannot be more than a moron. This is a tragic situation and a crime of passion. Her colleagues had the courage and the guts to investigate her and keep it concealed all the time. I hope that justice will take its course and she pays for what she did but not with the death penalty. I'm a European and if we accuse Iran of being an inhumane state and we western powers send people to the gallows then we better not point any finger at all. I hope that the family of the victim will finally find some rest.

• Scary and disconcerting but typical that now that this woman is accused of murder, people who until now saw her eyes as sincere and intense in a good way now see in them Charles Manson's eyes and swear they can "see" the "eyes of a murderer." The power of suggestion and groupthink. In fact if you were asked to choose between her and the man at the easel WITHOUT reading the background, you'd say it was him -- look at THOSE eyes. • I knew her as well. Her nickname within the department was Spazerous! She was an ok lady, except if the shit hit the fan, she would spaz out. Man, never in my wildess dreams would I suspect her of this. Yep, those eyes were kind of freaky. Anyways, remember she is only charged, not convicted.

We like to make note of the victims in notorious murder cases, which too often get tagged with the name of the alleged killer -- and the victim is forgotten. • The only thing stolen from the home at the time of the attack was the marriage license. Apparently, the struggle lasted for quite a long time, more than an opportunistic robbery, but more like a personal grudge-type situation. Yet the police at the time did not bother to check into the husband's ex-girlfriend history, maybe because the ex-girlfriend was a cop. Now all the cases Lazarus has overseen or been involved in in the last 20 years are to be reviewed.
