Max Taves and LA Weekly beat NYT for DeBakey biomedical award
Taves beat several leading papers, including The New York Times. Other winners announced today by The Foundation for Biomedical Research for the eighth annual Michael E. DeBakey Journalism Awards were Michael Anft of Johns Hopkins Magazine, Scott Pelley and Denise Schrier Cetta of 60 Minutes and Jonathan Hamilton of National Public Radio.
Taves won in the highly competitive "Print - Large Market" category. The judging panel was composed of journalists and members of the scientific community. His win comes on the heels of the Weekly's domination at the Los Angeles Press Club awards last Sunday in the categories of Hard News, Investigative, News Feature, Entertainment Feature, Political Journalist of the Year and Columnist.
