Queer Town: Chaz Bono Goes Public About Transgender Transition

• Her chromosomes are still XX, not XY.

• @chyna, how do you know that gender is fixed at birth? How could you know that is the case for everyone?

• I have to agree with Drew and I'll just ignore the recent, obviously ignorant and immature, comments. Well done Chaz!! People take a long time to feel comfortable with who they are (if ever) - be it their sexuality, their gender or anything really. I also agree with the Chaz' comment: 'I believe that gender is something between your ears, not between your legs.' We are all effected hormonally in utero at a certain stage of pregnancy. This, I believe, more than anything else affects our feelings about gender and sexuality but obviously doesn't affect our chromosomes - although gender also isn't as black and white as you'd think. In any case. Life is tough, people who have the courage to fly in the face of social norms, stigma and ignorance deserve applause. Go Chaz!

• Who would go through the pain of surgery and irreversible change UNLESS they believed with all their heart that they were transgender? Chaz was already accepted as an out-lesbian, so, this transition was unnecessary unless he found no peace in himself from being merely gay, when he was male. Most of these transgenders are born with ambiguous sexual organs, as well as hormones. It takes a lot of courage to be who you are, and go through so much to be true to yourself. Live and let live. We all live in our own skin, not someone else's, and it's none of our business to judge someone else's choice.

• I have to agree with chyna. Born a female will always be a female. It does not matter what you sew on, or cut off, you will be a woman for the rest of your life. With that said. I do not feel hatred for Chastity. If she things cutting her body up will make her happy I feel so sorry for her. I am afraid that she will never find the happiness she seeks. But I wish her well.

• Wow, Chyna. Take that hatred and meanness elsewhere. It takes courage to fight against what we see on the outside in order to create what exists, in truth, on the inside. I applaud Chaz for making the changes to represent his real self. And to Martina, as a person between genders myself, you might try to recognize that the process to transition can take a long time. Sometimes a person first recognizes the sex they are attracted to before they recognize the sex they feel to be inside. That would explain the lesbian to male transition. I have known men who transitioned and then realized they actually like men and prefer to be gay men instead of remain the straight women they had been before. It's still about finding your truth in the end. Whatever that may be.

• Sorry, not buying into this whole 'transgender' crap. You're born who you are, and just cutting off or adding on bits to your body does NOT make you a man or a women. Chastity Bono can call herself whatever she wants, and she can pretend to be a man, but genetically she's a woman and always will be. I don't care WHAT she's attracted to, sexually, she can screw termite infested logs for all I care, but she's never going to be a man, no matter how much surgery she has.

• Way to go Chaz! You're pioneering the way for transgendered celebrities. So many people are stuck in a life that is complete agony and misery. Lot's of people don't understand this, and many transsexuals themselves aren't able to quite wrap their heads around this health condition. You have to have nerves of steel to do something like this. Whether you understand or not. Whether you agree with this or not. You have to agree that this deserves a lot of respect either way. Lots of people are coming to Yanhee Hospital for their plastic surgery needs, because they simply cannot afford the 200,000 dollars out of pocket costs in the USA.

• Given that there have been transsexual men around as role models and guides for sixty years now, and "I always felt like the male from the time I was a child", why did he make such a very big thing about "coming out" as a lesbian in 1995? Not getting at him, but we need some truth about just who pressured him to do that Advocate front cover, and so much other lesbian work, which was all lies? Could it have been the then (and often still) highly transphobic L&G groups and publications?
