Queer Town: Harvey Milk Gets His Day in California

• Uhh are you making this up? This post is some f-ed up sh*t kid. Ive met braindead chimpanzees who were smarter than you.

• Tolerance and getting along with others is something kids do need to learn at school. However, sexual matters are extremely sensitive and should be taught at home. Any kid goes through a gay period where the opposite sex has cooties. Children are too young to be exposed to these things until they are at least in High School and begins to feel their horomones flowing. I believe this is not a Christian/non-Christian issue. This bill is a way for gay activists to thrust their life style on young impressionable children. Jesus was assasinated for a cause, as were many other people. They may have even been better causes, but no holiday is given them. That shows it is not tolerance and the other high sounding ideals that are being taught here, because certainly there are martyers that we all can agree with to teach those principles. Why start a controversy? Because of insecurity, and incompleteness, and inadequate feelings, and all these needing affirmation for my lifestyle. I want kids to know I am all right, when deep inside I am wondering myself. If I fight for the cause, I can squelch these feelings. What I really need healing and comfort. Why hurt young children for my own comfort my forcing them to sort out sexual issues before their time? Parents, keep your kids home. Christian or not, they don't need more complications in their young lives.

• I just posted this on the SaveCalifornia Facebook page, one of those anti-gay hate groups. It applies to some people here too: Yes, let's keep our children home from school on Harvey Milk Day. Let's teach them to hate gays, so that one day, when they find out that they are gay themselves, they will end up hating us, hating themselves and committing suicide. One in three teenage suicides is gay-related. And that's thanks to you, small-minded, bigots. You would rather have your children kill themselves, than open up your hearts and minds and embrace the god given diversity of the people around you. You call yourselves christians, but you have forgotten the true teachings of Christ. Like Christ, Harvey gave his life for his beliefs, for the common good of his people. Like Christ, Harvey never judged or condemned anyone. And like Christ, Harvey surrounded himself with a group of men who believed in him and were willing to dedicate their lives to his cause. The world is changing, and apparently Arnold Schwarzenegger is open-minded enough to allow himself to learn, to educate himself on the issues, and to change his mind. You should try it sometimes! Then you will see that we are a lot like you; we believe in family and protecting our children. We want to get married and have families! But it doesn't matter what we want, say or do; you will never accept us as your equals. Well, as far as I am concerned; thank god for THAT!

• Whenever I read people's comments talking about protecting their kids from the gay menace in school, I can't help but think that that attitude will end up backfiring on them and their kids...in other words, their own kids may be gay, and they could use a role model to help them deal with their sexual orientation. Also, that gay kid may be less likely to encounter bullying if the other kids in school learn a few things about someone like Harvey Milk and the very American values he stood for, which are freedom and equality, among other things. As a parent, wouldn't you want that kind of tolerant atmosphere in school for your gay son or daughter? Take care, Patrick Range McDonald

• From Atlanta, as a GEORGIA Native, I thank the Governor of California for doing something that should have been done a long time ago. To violate the rights of someone based on who they love is utmost ignorance. Society WILL evolve. To those who have a problem with this, I challenge You to open Your heart, stop watching Fox News, and try to understand what is wrong with interfering with nature. Yes, it is nature to love another, regardless of color, gender, or any other stupid categories we humans created such as nationality. We can preserve culture while ending hatred. It can be done, but ignorance is going to have to lose it's terminal grip on the heart of so called conservatives.

• Nick, Actually, many gay people raise children, and we send our children to school. Oh, also many gay people are also "proper Christians."

• I can't believe Arnold did this. My kids will not be attending school the entire week of May 22nd. I will campaign that every parent not send their children to school on May 22nd. This is a very sad day for California.

• I would like to be able to have a say in what my kids are taught in school. If someone is gay or lesbian they so be it, they did not learn it in a classroom. If you are gay then there is a strong chance that you dont have kids in school. Let the majority of the parents decide what is best for our kids. Remember before you bash us straight people...your parents were most likely straight, as were your grandparents, and so on. My kids will NOT be going to school on May 22nd and considering the liberal agenda I may opt to home schooling or enrolling them in a proper Christian school.

• The photo deserves a more detailed caption: The individual at left is Jos�arria, a noted San Francisco drag performer who is the first openly gay person that we know of anywhere in the world to have run for elective office. In 1961, when sodomy was still a crime in California and at the height of a wave of police raids of gay bars, Sarria was a candidate for election to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. He didn't win, but he received nearly 6,000 votes -- and thereby launched the movement of LGBT people into electoral politics. The City of San Francisco recently honored Sarria by renaming a block of 16th Street in the Castro neighborhood; it's now known as "Jos�arria Court." Sarria's personal papers and memorabilia -- including the dress he's wearing in the photo -- are preserved by the GLBT Historical Society in San Francisco. At the age of 85, Sarria now lives in the Palm Springs area and is still active in the gay community, notably with the Imperial Court organization which he founded in 1965.

At a time when LBGT people face constant degradation politically and personally, you have chosen to take an important stance by recognizing the achievements of a great Californian. Our LGBT youth need to see and know that people like Harvey Milk are role models and are proof positive that gays can be productive and influential members of society. Thank you again. • Arnold, I can't even put into words how disgraceful and disgusting I think you are....!!! How could anyone with any amount of common sense give such a P.O.S. like Harvey Milk any kind of notoriety much less make our kids honor such a vile, disgusting, immoral, P.O.S.......He raped kids how disgusting do you have to be before you are recognized as garbage.....Harvey Milk was garbage and so was that bill, total complete Garbage that should have been thrown out and incinerated just like Harvey should have been....!!!
