McCourts Split As Dodgers Vie For Championship

What would baseball be without drama outside the diamond? On the eve of the Dodgers' National League Championship Series opener against the Phillies today, team owner Frank McCourt confirmed he is separating from wife Jamie.

The question is, do the billionaires jointly own the team, or does it belong to Mr. McCourt alone? If they do have to split the Dodgers, as is likely the scenario in a what some speculate is an impending divorce, what becomes of the team? Jamie McCourt is listed as club's CEO, but Frank claims to be the owner. Their son, Drew, is director of marketing.

"Frank McCourt and Jamie McCourt confirm that they are separated," according to a Dodgers statement. "This is a personal matter and they request that their privacy be respected. They will be making no public statements."

McCourt, dubbed the "parking lot attendant" by the Times' T.J. Simers because he made his fortune partly based on his development of inner-city parking lot properties, bought the Dodgers in 2004 for $430 million.

Although he originally wanted to purchase his home team, the Boston Red Sox, he's been seen as a benevolent steward in L.A., where the Dodgers have reached the postseason in three of the five years he's owned the team. He has vowed to preserve Dodger Stadium as the longtime future home of the team.

Fox Sports has the couple heading for a full-on divorce. Can't be pretty.
