Girl Shot at New Helen Bernstein High School in Hollywood

Categories: Crime, Education

It's a gorgeous high school just off the 101 Freeway, lauded a few years ago by school officials as the new face of once-rundown Hollywood and named after Los Angeles education reformer Helen Bernstein.

But earlier today a girl was shot and seriously wounded when she got in the crossfire of street gangs who still control much of the new, supposedly improved Hollywood.

The cops did not identify the street gangs that might be involved, and Los Angeles Unified School District spokeswoman Ellen Morgan said the girl's condition was not life-threatening and her condition was stable.

She was shot in the middle of the day on well-traveled North Wilton Avenue near Fountain Avenue, a heavily developed older residential street -- a bold move by the four gunmen police believe were involved.

Witnesses reported three or four young people running from the scene, the former site of the studios for KTTV-TV Channel 11, KLAC-AM (570) and KMET-FM (94.7). Authorities believe the teenagers or young adults may have been responsible for the shooting.

A number of schools in the immediate area, long accustomed to shootings of and by students both on and off campus, locked down for a short time -- then they rather routinely reopened.

Business as usual in Hollywood and Los Angeles. This time, nobody died.
