The Getty Foundation Wednesday announced it's giving out $3.1 million in grants to support a massive, Southern California-wide series of exhibitions, Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945-1980, to take place in 2011 and 2012.

The money is going to 26 regional institutions to support their roles in the program that celebrates 30 "thematically linked" exhibitions -- what the foundation calls "the largest collaborative project ever undertaken by museums in the region" -- that showcase postwar art in Southern California.

"I commend the Getty for their leadership and investment in Los Angeles arts, and for
bringing all these institutions together to share and celebrate an amazing history," stated Mayor Antonion Villaraigosa. "The Getty, with its ongoing support, has demonstrated its commitment to arts in Los Angeles. This initiative will certainly drive cultural tourism to our city and show the world all we have to offer. Pacific Standard Time reinforces Los Angeles' reputation as a major cultural destination."

The grants bring the amount the Getty Foundation has invested in the exhibition to $6.7 million. The money will help institutions from San Diego to Santa Barbara and from the sea to Palm Springs participate in Pacific Standard Time. LACMA, the J. Paul Getty Museum, MOCA, the Hammer Museum, the Orange County Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, the Museum of Latin American Art and more are scheduled to participate.
