Queer Town: Openly Gay Episcopal Priest Closer to Confirmation

Categories: Queer Town
Religious types around the world are closely watching the confirmation process of the Rev. Canon Mary Douglas Glasspool, a lesbian who serves in the Episcopal Church's Diocese of Los Angeles.

As noted on Queerty.com, Glasspool was elected in December to become an assistant bishop, but she needs 56 "consents" from other Episcopalian bishops in the Unites States to be confirmed.

So far, according to the Christian Post, Glasspool has received 29 consents in the first month of a 120-day process -- in other words, her confirmation is looking good.

If the reverend gets the nod, she will only be the second openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church -- the first to be elected and confirmed was the Rev. Gene Robinson of New Hampshire.

Unsurprisingly, Glasspool's possible confirmation is making certain folks in religious quarters nervous.

The Rev. Herman Hollerith IV, bishop of the Diocese of Southern Virginia, describes Glasspool's possible confirmation as a probable "breaking point" for conservatives in the Episcopal Church, who may want to leave as a response, the Christian Post reports.

Hollerith does not support Glasspool's confirmation.

Glasspool, who was born in the New York City borough of Staten Island, lives with her longtime partner in Los Angeles.
