• We've gone way too soft as a people when this is a huge deal. I remember coaches organizing boxing matches to settle grudges. I remember boys learning important lessons, like how to lose gracefully instead of shooting someone else. I remember learning to adapt after taking that first punch. I remember panicking, thinking "no ref, no rules to save me," and I remember the pride I felt when I saved myself. Life doesn't have a ref to blow the whistle and stop you from taking a beating. There's a point where protecting our children means allowing them to test themselves against the real world, with consequences.

• Why is a fight between adults criminal assault and a fight between those under 18 year old normal behavior? Let's start treating these "children" as adults with adult consequences for their behavior, maybe then "fighting" wouldn't be just some thing kids do. The only people I knew who started fights in grade school were total losers then and I imagine total losers today.

• Stephen Wesley's apparent repressed homosexuality, like all repressed homosexuality, is not attractive. Unless we hear in the next few days that any repressed homosexuality was not sublimated within these boxing matches. Then it would still be unattractive, but it wouldn't be repressed.

• Having worked with juvenile offenders, I'd like to see this teacher in a room with a fighter. Lock him tehm in for 15 minutes. Disgusting.
