Family Asks Well-Wishers To 'Stand And Deliver' For Jaime Escalante
The family of Jaime Escalante, the Garfield High School math teacher known for getting his Eastside students to strive for better educations, has announced that they need more money to help the 80-year-old battle cancer.

Family members told Fox 11 News that Escalante, the subject of the 1988 film Stand And Deliver, has been fighting cancer but that he has run out of money for treatment and needs another $25,000 to keep up his medical regimen.
Escalante has was portrayed on the big screen by Edward James Olmos, who injected the character with a demanding, perfectionist personality. The teacher is said to have transformed the education of many Latino students who didn't realize they had it in them to master advanced mathematics and algebra.
