L.A. Lost Nearly 57,000 Manufacturing Jobs In The Last Year
The Los Angeles region lost 56,681 manufacturing jobs -- more than the population of Culver City -- from February 2009 to February 2010, according to Manufacturers' News Inc. data cited in the San Francisco Business Times.
The job losses represent the bulk of California's shrinking manufacturing sector, which was down 79,000 jobs overall for the same period.
According to the report, the biggest employment losers statewide included lumber and wood (down 14.2 percent), furniture and fixtures (11.1), and electronics manufacturing (the largest sector, down 3.1 percent). Food, the number three manufacturing sector, held steady.
