Federal authorities over the weekend apparently searched Santa Monica restaurant the Hump for allegedly serving whale meat.

An organizer with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society told the Weekly he became aware of the alleged practice several months ago and enlisted documentary filmmaker Charles Hambleton to investigate. Over a period of about seven months Hambleton documented the restaurants alleged practice of serving the meat and subsequently federal authorities were brought in.

"We had vegan girls there eating all this meat," our Sea Shepherd Conservation Society source, who didn't want his name used, said. "These poor girls hadn't eaten meat in years."

He said the meat served was from an endangered sei whale. It's not clear what, if any, charges the restaurant could face. It's long been known among foodies and Hollywood cognoscenti that the eatery next to Santa Monica Airport not only served whale meat but turtle blood as well -- at least according to our sources

"It's really really a bad place," said our Sea Shepherd Conservation Society source, who did not want his name used.

It's possible that the undercover footage from the filmmaker could be used to make a documentary, he said.
