L.A. County Leader Antonovich Calls Proposed Arizona Boycott 'Stupid'

We noted yesterday that the county's proposed boycott of Arizona would have at least one detractor: Supervisor Mike Antonovich. He didn't disappoint observers Thursday when he issued a press release calling the idea "stupid."

"As elected officials, we take an oath to uphold the federal and state constitutions," he stated. "To boycott a state for enforcing our federal laws is in direct violation of that oath. The propaganda by both the media and others is intentionally misleading because Arizona's law mirrors federal law."

The county's 5th District Republican appears to support Arizona's controversial law, to say the least. The legislation, which goes into effect in July, encourages police to check in the immigration status of people of suspicious national origin whom they detain or arrest.

Mirroring the city of L.A.'s boycott, the county proposal, put forth by Supervisor Gloria Molina, would ban most county travel to Arizona and cut off future business with the state.

"This knee jerk reaction to support law breakers at the expense of law-abiding legal immigrants and other residents is irresponsible," Antonovich states. "A divestment and a boycott is a disingenuous show of perceived political correctness that will only backfire and will shoot us in the heart -- not in the foot."

Antonovich, by the way, fancies himself a cowboy, with one of his official images capturing him atop a horse, hat-on-head. Shhhhh. Nobody tell him that the cowboy milieu -- el rodeo and all -- originated ... south of the border.
