Nine Arrested At Westwood Rally Fueled In Part By Arizona Immigration Law

Nine people were arrested for blocking traffic at an immigration rally in Westwood Thursday, a California Highway Patrol spokesman confirmed to LA Weekly. About 200 demonstrators gathered outside the Federal Building on Wilshire Boulevard to show their support for a proposed national law that would allow young undocumented immigrants who finish two years of college or military service to become legalized.

Many at the event, however, were charged up over Arizona's controversial immigration law, which encourages police in that state to check the immigration status of people suspected of being in the country illegally.

The event was organized by students at nearby UCLA.

"I am doing this so that students will no longer be terrorized by legislation like SB1070 in
Arizona," said UCLA student Andrea Ortega, "and not have to go to school in fear that their families are deported back home.''

As a result of the mass along Wilshire Boulevard and the CHP and police units that watched over it, traffic was backed up on the 405 freeway offramps leading to Wilshire Boulevard.

The arrestees, by the way, were cited and released, according to the CHP.
