Mayor Villaraigosa: If Suns Win, We'll Take Sheriff Joe

Now that Los Angeles is boycotting the state of Arizona, it seems odd for Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to be offering a wager with the mayor of Phoenix over the NBA Western Conference Finals.

Apparently the embargo doesn't cover that. But this year's bet is no mere exchange of Laker jerseys for Arizona Iced Tea.

No, no. This year, if the Suns win, Villaraigosa has offered to take Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. "Perhaps a stint in Los Angeles would teach him that you cannot deduce immigration status simply by looking at a person," the mayor says.
If the Lakers win, he's offered to send Republican gubernatorial candidates Meg Whitman and Steve Poizner, whom he notes are "battling for supremacy on the issue of illegal immigration."

"Perhaps some time in Arizona would show them both that being governor isn't always all it's cracked up to be," says the mayor, a former gubernatorial aspirant.

The mayor also jokes that since Suns star Steve Nash is Canadian, "we look forward to welcoming Steve to our team the next time he forgets to carry his passport with him."
