American Medical Association Backs Mandatory Condoms In Porn

The American Medical Association has joined the Aids Healthcare Foundation's calls for a government mandate that porn actors should be required to wear condoms. The association voted at its annual meeting to support legislation to that end, although it's not clear that there is legislation in the works on a national level. (Attempts have been made in Sacramento, but so far, nada). According to Xbiz (spotted at Fishbowl LA), the motion at the Chicago event was brought by a group of California doctors.

Language from the motion states that the rule would be "an act of role modeling to ensure the general public use condoms."

The Aids Healthcare Foundation has been lobbying the state Department Occupational Safety and Health (Cal-OSHA) to enforce workplace safety rules already on the books that are meant to protect workers from the transmission of diseases. The department is considering it.

San Fernando Valley porn industry leaders argue that mandating condom use would force the industry underground, where there would be less regulation, not more. As is, the industry's bigger studios abide by a voluntary program whereby actors are supposed to get tested for STDs regularly and show up to shoots with current results.
