L.A. Council Puts Off Vote On Possible Arizona Boycott Buster
The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday put off for one day a vote on whether or not to grant a red-light camera operator based in Scottsdale an exception to its economic boycott of Arizona travel and business. 
The council decided to delay the vote because a key member of the Public Safety Committee, Councilman Greig Smith, was not in chambers Tuesday. The committee recommended the exception be granted, and he was the sole vote against the boycott.
American Traffic Solutions runs the cameras, but its contract is up June 30. City administrative officer Miguel Santana argues that if the company is not allowed to operate the system, the costs to the city in finding a new vendor, cutting red-light camera tickets for months, and installing new equipment could run $1.5 million.
The city's boycott was inspired by Arizona's controversial new immigration law, which encourages police in the state to check the immigration status of suspects they believe could be in the country illegally.
