Ex-Cop Mayor Of Compton Gets His Police Department Back; Sheriff's Deputies Told To Take A Hike

Almost ten years after it was shuttered, the Compton Police Department was revived. The Compton City Council late Tuesday voted 3-2 to reestablish its own department and stop contracting with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for police services.

According to Fox 11 News, former Compton cop Eric Perrodin, the mayor, cast the deciding vote. The mayor's brother, Percy Perrodin, Jr. was a captain who clashed with then-Mayor Omar Bradley in the year prior to Bradley's successful effort in 2000 to shutter the department and transition to the Sheriff's services.

The city recently entered into a controversial security contract with a firm that has close ties to Percy Perrodin, Jr.

In any case, the move to reestablish the Compton force would seem like the Perrodins' revenge. Some critics are concerned, however, that a smaller municipal force would lack the tools -- a dedicated homicide unit, several helicopters -- possessed by the Sheriff's department in such a murder-plagued city, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The process of establishing a force and terminating service with the county, however, could take a year, according to the Times.
