Bicyclists Plan Big Meeting Tonight Regarding LAPD Conduct

A large crowd of bicyclists was expected at a Tuesday night meeting where police action against cyclists over the weekend will be discussed. An officer allegedly threw a kick at a bike rider while other cops appeared to tackle a videographer who captured the moment on tape during a Los Angeles Critical Mass ride Friday staged to protest British Petroleum's role in the Gulf oil spill.

"If you are a witness, a victim, or just generally concerned with LAPD's infringement on cyclist's rights please attend and give public comment at the LA City Council's Bicycle Advisory Committee meeting taking place this Tuesday," states a Facebook post about the meeting (via LAist).

Interestingly, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman tells the Weekly the LAPD is aware of the meeting but that "we don't have any plans to send anyone tonight."

It's a strange stance given the department's swift response to the incident: "The Chief of Police and I pledged our strong support to work closely with the bike community and that promise has not wavered," stated LAPD Assistant Chief Earl Paysinger.

Wouldn't such a pledge include showing up for just such an occasion?

The meeting takes place at 7 p.m. at Hollywood Neighborhood City Hall, 6501 Fountain Ave.
