Mayor Asks Ethics Commission To Review Free Tickets
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has voluntarily asked for a review by the city Ethics Commission and the City Attorney's office that would determine whether or not he has violated any rules for accepting concert and sporting tickets given to him over the past five years.
Under city ethics rules (PDF) elected leaders must generally report gifts deemed to be worth more than $50.
Villaraigosa has attended more than 80 entertainment and sporting events since 2005, including at least 13 Lakers games, and 12 Dodger games. Tickets to the Academy Awards alone were worth roughly $21,000.
The mayor has argued that he's on the clock at these events -- he often doles out ceremonial certificates -- and as such the tickets are exempted from the ethics rules.
"We continue to believe that the mayor has complied with all applicable laws and regulations," a spokeswoman from the mayor's office said.
