• My favorite part of the story is when Will tries to tell the police that the thief had stolen his musical talent, and the police told him that unless he had any evidence of it existing in the first place, Will.i.am couldn't ask them to find it.

• While poor grammar and spelling is generally accepted in blogs and chat, this attempting to be "news". I dont know about you, but if they cant put in the time to get the simple things right, how accurate can the big picture be?

• Wow, the grammar comment brought the comment section alive! "was" sounds very trashy and uneducated to me when used in the way it was in this article.. If I wanted to hear "was" used in the wrong way i'd watch BET

• no matter, the important thing here is the grammer is used in a difficult fashion. Even if something is grammatically correct, it can still be wrong if sounds goofy or doesn't flow well.

• "Police department" would have been an acceptable singular unit as would "police officer". Failing that, "police" becomes either a plural noun or (even more incorrectly), a verb. oh, and +2 pts to Um for the phrase: "smarmy little boner".

• @not so happy: Counter examples: "The family IS coming for dinner." "The board of directors WAS not happy with his performance." The difference that you're trying to get at is that "police" is a plural noun referring to many individual police officers, whereas "police department" is a singular noun referring to a unit that's made up of many individual police officers. Subtle, but important. :)

• @happy - Actually, while we're into kicking grammar lessons, it's "were" (assuming you meant "actually, is is" not "actually, is it". Police is a group of individuals and treated as plural even though there is not an "s" on the end. Additionally, you wouldn't use "the" in front of a singular person. You wouldn't say "The Giants was good", "The Jim were hungry" or "The mice is fast" (unless you're from a fly-over state...but that's another rant).

Nazi references are so overused as to become meaningless. Try exersizing those brain cells of yours a little and come up with a less abused-to-death metaphor.

• Jim, was isn't correct because "the police" isn't a single unit. "The police officer was able to find some of the stolen goods" is a correct use of the word 'was'. The proper grammar would be 'were' for the way "police" is used in the article above, and 'was' is specifically improper grammar.

• @Phantoms Eh, that's not grammatically incorrect. In this case, they used the word "police" as a single unit, so using "was" is fine. Using "were" would also be correct though.
