Bell Mayor Oscar Hernandez told reporters at an afternoon news conference Monday that he will not seek reelection and will forgo his salary through the end of his term. The announcement came as city activists asked for the mayor and most of the City Council to step down for taking $100,000-a-year salaries for their work as part-timers at the city.

Demonstrators were poised to show their faces at a City Council meeting scheduled for Monday night to discuss the salaries and those of officials, including a near $800,000-a-year city manager, who have resigned following the revelations that they make more than the governor of California.
