Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation Tuesday that required that eggs sold in California come from hens that are not crammed in cages, according to The Humane Society.

The law, which follows the guidelines outlined in Proposition 2, requires all eggs sold in the state as of Jan. 1, 2015, to come from hens that are able to stand up, fully extend their limbs, lie down and extend their wings without touching each other or the sides of their enclosure.

Roughly 63 percent of voters passed Proposition 2 in 2008.

The measure was created to decrease the probability of salmonella spreading and to protect animals from inhumane treatment.

According to Mercury News, the law also applies to out-of-state suppliers who wish to sell their eggs in California grocery stores.
