GLAAD Names CW and MTV As the Most Gay Friendly Networks

GLADD noted in a press release that the survey reviewed 4,787.5 hours of primetime programming from the five major networks (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX and the CW) for LGBT focused content. They also analyzed 1,227.75 hours of original primetime programming from 10 major cable networks. The ratings of "excellent," "good," "adequate" and "failing" were given to each network based on their LGBT content.

MTV was the first network in the survey's history to receive an excellent rating. More than 40 percent of the music network's 207.5 hours of original primetime programming was LGBT-inclusive and "reflected the ethnic and racial diversity of the LGBT community." The network's most famous reality series "The Real World" is noted for featuring the late Pedro Zamora as an openly gay, HIV-positive character during the show's 3rd season.

The CW got high marks with 35 percent of its programming being LGBT-inclusive. This was the highest percentage ever recorded for a broadcast network.

Fox came in second with 30 percent. However the network only received an adequate rating for stereotypical and defamatory content. ABC came in third with 26 percent but did receive a good rating.

Though it's the most watched network on television, CBS came in last with a mere 7 percent and received a failing grade.

For cable, ABC Family received a high rating with 37 percent and TBS ranked last with only 2 percent.
