More than 10,000 jobs will be offered to Los Angeles youths this summer after the city of Los Angeles was granted $25 million in stimulus money by the federal government. The youth program, Hire LA's Youth, is to provide employment opportunities and vocational training for 10,000 people ages 14-24, according to a statement from L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's office.

Participants will work six-week paid internships during the months of July and August. Youths are eligible if they are in CALWORKS and Food Stamp households, if they are under foster care, or if they are on General Relief.

Employers include Kaiser Permanente, which has vowed to hire more than 400 youths.

"Hire LA's Youth is creating fulfilling summer employment for our youth in the short-term and establishing the building blocks for the long-term success of our local economy," Villaraigosa stated.

With only 6,000 youths registered with the program so far, HIre LA is encouraging eligible people to apply by contacting their local OneSource center.

The $25 million was given to the program by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Service via the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.
