Protecting Southern California Toad Would Cost $789 Million
According to a study by U.S. Fish and Wildlife, the cost to protect the endangered arroyo toad in Southern California could amount to $789 million over 25 years. The study looked at a proposal to protect more than 112,000 acres of critical habitat for the toad in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Ventura, San Bernardino, Riverside, Orange, and San Diego counties. 
The $789 million includes costs from scientific studies, construction delays and reduction in land values because of restrictions on development,according to the Ventura County Star.
Most of the costs are expected to occur in new development, with the greatest cost of $211 million expected in San Diego County.
The two-inch toad was put on the list of endangered species after development depleted the habitat for the toad. According to reports, areas near rivers and streams are especially important for the animal's survival.
