Bell City Council Agrees To Roll Back Property Taxes After $3 Million In Overcharges Revealed

The Bell City Council early Tuesday voted to roll-back its property tax rate after state controller John Chiang discovered that the municipality had overcharged residents by $3 million over the last three years.

The vote came in the a.m. after the council met for a marathon Monday night session at which protesters continued to demand members resign over their once-high salaries and the exorbitant pay approved for a former city manager and other officials. Associated Press reports that the vote to roll back the tax rate was unanimous.
Interim city manager Pedro Carrillo has said he wants to find a way to get refunds to residents who overpaid, even though state law mandates that any cash back would go to public schools.
