A woman whose breasts were removed at County-USC Medical Center following an erroneous cancer diagnosis will be able to settle a lawsuit against the county for just less than $200,000.

The $198,000 settlement was approved this week by the County Board of Supervisors, according to Associated Press. Ana Jimenez-Salgado underwent a double mastectomy at the hospital after an August 2007 biopsy there determined she had breast cancer. After her breasts were removed, however, it was determined she did not have the disease.

According to county documents, doctors might have been tripped up because she had "a benign condition with features that are very similar to cancerous cells."

Following Jimenez-Salgado's suit, the county acknowledged its doctors failed to review evidence from a biopsy that could have prevented the mastectomy.
