In an attempt to increase transparency following the recent Bell salary controversy, Los Angeles City Controller Wendy Greuel unveiled on Friday a database of city employee pay rates, making Los Angeles the largest city in the nation to post salaries of their employees online, she says.

"The public's trust has been broken as a result of the recent scandal in Bell," Gruel stated. "This is an important step to provide greater transparency and openness in how taxpayer dollars are spent."

The database organizes the information by department and the positions' corresponding salaries. It is expected to be updated quarterly, though actual compensation for employees, such as salary reductions, furloughs and overtime pay have not yet been calculated.

"Angelenos have a right to know how their taxpayer dollars are being spent, and I think this is an important step in that direction," Greuel stated.
