The U.S. Bureau of Land Management this week was looking into the tragic off-road-racing accident that took the lives of eight people over the weekend on land it controls in the high desert of San Bernardino County. In fact, all off-road racing events in the California desert are now under federal review.

"The BLM is conducting an official national review of the tragic [off-highway vehicle] incident on Saturday, August 14, at its Johnson Valley OHV Open Area ... ," a statement from the agency sent to LA Weekly states. "We expect the review and investigations to be done expeditiously, but we have no specific completion date."

"In addition, the BLM is reviewing all OHV events in the California Desert District for safety provisions," reads the statement.

Eight people died and twelve more were injured when a prerunner Ford Ranger pickup launched of a rock-pile jump and flipped over, landing in a crowd of spectators that had lined up right against the dirt track.
