Rosendahl Responds To Criticism Of RV Situation In Venice, Fast-Tracks Restrictive Parking Zones

• It's interesting that the polemic is now centered around cleanliness and safety. The rv residents and homeless have individually lived in Venice for equivalently short or long spans of their lives as the privatized landed residents. I would personally suggest that citizenship or community membership is not exclusively a privilege tied to land. If that is possible, then I imagine that security and cleanliness are values shared amongst Venice denizens. How could we pursue those values for all in our community? Some housed Venicians have said that in particular people without apts, houses, (garages?) affect their safety and health. Human waste on streets. Strangers living nearby. Aggressive behaviors. These feelings have been well publicized. Rv residents and homeless have also experienced unsanitary and unsafe conditions. There are few public bathrooms, not to mention showers, making cleanliness difficult and disposal practically impossible while the human body necessitates defecation in order to live. Fearing the illegality and exposure, a bathroomless person may attempt not to poo or pee, causing health problems. How can this human need be addressed safely and hygienically? safety. The media wants to paint us as factions, but it's not necessary to deal with community issues as enemies. So, safety is also an issue for rv residents and homeless. They don't know their neighbors (housed or not) and their propensities for violence or aggression except by getting to know them, which people do. They have reported or I have seen some common threats to their safety. I have seen spray-painted hate messages on rv's, and many obscenity-laced and threatening notes. There are many bold neighbors who will pound o vehicle walls, yelling and threatening the understandably scared people inside. What is the threat? Children have been threatened. Property has been threatened (and actual tires slashed and other damage). The biggest threat is the police, who will be called to get rid of people. Police do function in this way. Even Rosendahl uses the term ''tool'' to describe the ordinances and police practices that will be used upon people. Police routinely pull people out of vehicle homes, run their information (to look for criminal record), search their vehicle-homes (with or without permission). So, the ''criminals'' are well on police radar. I'm not sure how common this practice is with people in houses and apts, so those criminals may not be known to the police. BUT, what police do is a threat to safety sometimes. They have handcuffed people frequently with no reasonable suspicion or probable cause, oh, except that people with rv's and old vans are reasonably thought to sleep in them, which is a crime, right? But they do this to sidewalk homeless too. Police threaten (to tow, arrest, take away children), and the people they threaten are standing outside their van, often unaggressive. They do this at night, sarcastically, ridiculing, interrupting attempts to clarify. Many residents have experienced such police gang-ups, and many suffer post traumatic stress disorder from police treatment and fear of threats, which are kept present by frequent police presence and contact. I know that it is hard to find advocates for this issue, but the police are experienced by a large number of residents as a safety problem. I wonder whether that would change if their stated function (by Rosendahl and others) was not to get rid of residents through use of ''tools'' such as ordinances on cars, laws against sleeping. How can the needs for cleanliness and security for all of our Venice community be addressed?

• just because I want, no demand to live in a somewhat safe and clean-er community I'm a "moneyed newcomer" I've lived in Venice since 1982 and moneyed is not even close to who i am. eff you!

• Bill Rosendahl is representative of the kind of tone-deaf city council person who knows how to pass the buck. The property owners and renters of Venice, who pay high city taxes, can just go out and get 2/3s of their neighbors to sign petitions, and maybe, just maybe, the city council will vote its approval for parking restrictions. This is the kind of BS that has far too long passed for leadership. Last time I looked, the RVs were still in Venice, causing the same problems they've caused for years. Rosendahl is a poseur who likes to have it both ways: call resident complaints justified, but blame it on the coastal commission. Tell us Bill, who's going to pay for the social services for the RV rig dwellers?

• Except most of these RV dwellers don't want to register for safe parking cuz they are like totally off the grid man and don't need no stinkin' rules dude so back off and chill out. Time to go guys! Go live off the grid somewhere else. Soooo sorry you can't behave like human beings. Sooo sorry living off the grid on the beach didn't work out for you. BYE
