Eight people were killed when an off-road vehicle plowed into a crowd during an evening race in Lucerne Valley, a high-desert community in San Bernardino.

The accident was reported at 7:48 p.m., according to the San Bernardino Sun. Initial reports had the number of dead at six, but the Desert Sun newspaper and then CBS2 news reported eight perished in the collision near Old Woman Springs and Bessemer Roads. At least nine others were injured, one seriously, according to reports.
