Councilman Ed Reyes introduced a motion at a meeting Tuesday to halt the installation of 1,000 solar panels in a hillside of the Montecito Heights area, The Eastsider LA reports.

The city's Building and Safety Department gave Broadview, a nursing home, two permits to install a solar array on a portion of its 11-acre property. The solar panels would supply 93 percent of Broadview's electricity needs, Michael Fisher, executive director of Broadside, told Eastsider LA.

Reyes wants the Building and Safety Department to stop work on the project because of concerns raised by local residents. Here's a portion of the motion which reads:

The solar panels may be located in a very high fire hazard severity zone, and therefore, there is concern from community residents as to its potential adverse impacts on public safety, water drainage, erosion, glare and obstruction of the existing habitat corridors.

"Public safety is a priority," Reyes said in a statement to the Weekly. "There are important public safety issues that need to be addressed. The solar panels might be located in a fire hazard zone. Also, we need to address potentially adverse impacts on erosion, glare and water drainage to best protect our residents."
