Jay Carson, Villaraigosa's Chief Deputy Mayor, Resigning
Former Hillary Clinton spokesman Jay Carson said this would be his last month as the city's chief deputy mayor, citing a one-year commitment and claiming victory in shaking up the mayor's office.
"The mayor and I had agreed that I would be here for a year and the task he gave me was to effect very specific and dramatic change during that year and I've reached that year and we've accomplished that change so the time is right for me to move on,'' Carson said.
Carson's shake up included the resignations of several staffers in Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's office as well as the appointment of Austin Beutner as first deputy mayor for economic and business development.
He also claimed credit for the mayoral initiative that would fast-track a massive outlay of light rail lines and other people-moving measures from a 30-year plan to one that would take only 10.
Villaraigosa said Carson "has served the city and my administration well -- helping accomplish an extraordinarily ambitious agenda in a very short period of time.''
Carson was paid $194,000 a year. He will continue to serve on the board of Film L.A. Inc. while working as an adjunct professor at USC. Villaraigosa said he would continue to seek Carson's advice on the 30/10 initiative too.
