Thousands Of Volunteers Will Clean Up Trash At Southern California Beaches As Part of Coastal Cleanup Day

Thousands of volunteers are set to clean up trash along Southern California beaches and waterways September 25, heeding a call from environmental nonprofit Heal The Bay. The massive effort is part of the 21st annual Coastal Cleanup Day.
The event will take place from 9 a.m. till noon at multiple locations throughout the Southland from Compton to Malibu. Volunteers will comb beaches, parks, lakes, streams, highways and alleys looking for trash that could make its way to the ocean.
There are 61 cleanup sites confirmed this year, which include locations in Santa Monica, Redondo Beach and Leo Carillo state beach. Among these sites, Heal the Bay designated five "Code Red" locations that need extra attention from cleanup crews. The areas are Dominguez Channel, Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park, Los Angeles River and Encino's Haskell Creek.
There are also special events planned around Coastal Cleanup Day that include L.A. Weekly's own Jonathan Gold curating the L.A. Craft Beer Crawl.
"The ocean needs us now more than ever and we all have a duty to protect it," Eveline Bravo of Heal the Bay said in a statement. "A single day of concerted action and education can make a world of difference."
