Alhambra City Councilwoman Messina, Who Paid $20,000 Under The Table To Smear Her Opponent In 2006, Now Runs Unopposed -- Along With Rest Of City Council

Here we thought the L.A. City Council was getting cozy.

But those old boys got nothin' on the five City Councilmembers of Alhambra -- a sweet stretch of suburbia just east of Glendale and south of Pasadena, population 86,000, apparently so content with itself that the November municipal elections have been canceled entirely.

That's right: not a single challenger. And the across-the-board shoo-ins can't exactly blame it on their own good behavior.

One of the five unopposed incumbents -- Barbara Messina, in charge of City District 2 -- paid a $14,000 fine this month for violating California's Political Reform Art in the 2006 municipal election. The California Fair Political Practices Commission accused Messina of smuggling $20,000 in unreported campaign funds through an org created by her husband/campaign manager to fund mailers smearing opponent Dan Agruello.

It's really a wonder nobody wants to run against her.

Messina -- who was first elected to the council in 1986, and has served as mayor three times since -- is playing dumb, of course. "My husband had no knowledge of what that committee was doing," she told the Alhambra Source, an online newspaper run by students from USC's journalism school. (Even if Mr. Messina was indeed stupid enough to fork over $20,000 to an unknown cause, no questions asked, he still didn't report the sum in his wife's campaign total. So that argument is sort of moot.)

The butthurt councilwoman went on to wonder why she was being targeted for playing dirty when she herself has been the target of "much dirtier campaigns."

"Nothing ever happens to the other people," the Valley girl whined to the Source.

Messina also has a pretty hilarious theory as to why nobody's running against her -- or any of her colleagues -- this November: "Everything is running smoothly, everything is running well, why would you look to change it?"

We received a letter last week from "An Alhambra Voter" who expressed dismay that even after the campaign scandal, a lyin' cheatin' politician like Messina would still be allowed to fill her semi-permanent seat over at City Hall. The letter reads:

"Her opponent at one time worked for former disgraced Los Angeles city councilman Richard Alatorre and she was using guilty by association, tarring her opponent with false information that he would 'allow Indian Casinos into Alhambra' as one of many false scare tactics. Her opponent eventually lost, due to these false and scare tactics."

To end on a dramatic note, Voter added: "Being an Alhambra resident, I fear retaliation from city government, so unfortunately I have to remain anonymous."

Where we think you're mistaken, dear concerned citizen, is in thinking that the Alhambra City Council is capable of actually doing something.

Then again, they do look kind of crafty:

There was a huge big rig truck fire and diesel spill on the 210 yesterday to add to the long list of crashes, jacknives, of trucks all along the 710, 210, 134...

Attention residents of Alhambra, Azusa, Bladwin Park, Cerritos, Claremont, Covina, Culver City, Diamond Bar, Duarte, Glendora, La Puente, Monterey Park, San Marino and South Gate!

Dangerous major truck accidents and worse is what we can expect unless we do something.

Barbara Messina has invested 28 years positioning herself on commissions and committees to punish and suppress any opposition to the expansion of the 710 project, especially Ara Najarian who was (until last week) on the METRO Board.

Messina, the Mayor of Alhambra greatest wish is to accomplish her dream of the 710 Freeway so she's rallied committee members to kick anyone out that stands in the way of adding more lanes to the 710, attracting more traffic to the 710/210/134/5 fwys (causing greater density in emissions) and her favorite thing is -the tunnel-.

The tunnel is a multi-billion $ twin-bore double decker 2x 4.5 mi length, no exit, TOLLway and built large enough to accommodate TRUCKS (the big rigs) TUNNEL--in an earthquake zone, a major hospital zone, intruding into the Arroyo Seco aquifers, and bringing direct harm to the residents of El Sereno, Alhambra, Monterey Park, Highland Park, Garvanza, South Pasadena, Pasadena, Arcadia, Duarte... all along the routes.

Please join in a letter writing campaign to stop this horrific nonsense. Send a letter to your mayor today. Tell your city representatives to renominate Mayor Najarian to the Metro Board of Directors.

And, budgets for the Gold Line extension to Claremont and the new rail serving Culver City will be gutted to fund the expansion of the 710 Fwy. It's a loser, baby!

Messina and Fasana are in political cahoots together when it comes to the SR-710 tunnel and LA County taxpayers getting the blinders put on while they bribe and commandeer from their posts. They never counted on public organizers getting underneath their campaigns to ram the tunnel through and Measure J getting defeated. And we are still here. Go to FB @ No 710 Freeway Extension also No710 onave64 as well as No on Measure J and on Twitter @ Metro710pr which is a satirical site to post witty as well as criticize posts against Metro and their unending campaign to extend the 710.

Regarding the Twitter feed we mentioned above it was conceived as a way to post *witty and criticle posts that expose Metro's poor outreach and flawed data.

I find it amazing the lengths that Barbara Messina will go to, to get what she wants and that the City of Alhambra blindly accepts her bad behavior.  An example of this is her recent sabotage of Glendale City Councilmember, Ara Najarian in his re-nomination to the Metro Board.  She lobbied the members of the City Selection Committee outside of the formal meeting and asked them not to vote for him.  Inside the meeting John Fasana agreed with her, stating that Board member Najarian continued to vote against the 710 Tunnel project and should be removed.  Najarian's own North County representatives had nominated him based on his stellar record in bringing good projects to the region such as the Gold Line and his responsible consideration for the entire LA County's benefit.  But Messina's workings behind the scenes convinced the San Gabriel Valley and other representatives to vote against Najarian.  This has never been done before.  Shame on her.  http://www.pasadenastarnews.com/news/ci_22149415/cities-vote-oust-metro-board-member-ara-najarian
