Parents Arrested After Fifth Grader Turns Them In For Having Marijuana Joints; Kid Inspired By L.A.-Founded D.A.R.E. Program

Categories: Marijuana

D.A.R.E. ensares parents who smoke -- gasp -- joints.
You gotta love D.A.R.E., the anti-drug program created by late Los Angeles police Chief Daryl Gates in 1983. It's done a great job of eradicating drugs in schools. More importantly, it's made snitches out of children who have been taught by cops to turn in their parents.

That's what happened last week in Matthews, North Carolina, a suburb of Charlotte, where an 11-year-old elementary school kid brought a few joints to campus and turned them in, saying they belonged to mom and dad.

This, of course, was after the good officers at D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) came to school to give their anti-drug lecture.

Matthews police Officer Stason Tyrrell told WBTV the 5th grader did the right thing:

"Even if it's happening in their own home with their own parents, they understand that's a dangerous situation because of what we're teaching them. That's what they're told to do, to make us aware."

The dad, age 40, and the mom, age 38, were arrested on suspicion of marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia -- misdemeanors.

The dad, who's name was withheld by the TV station, told WBTV it's "no one's business" how the 11-year-old got a hold the joints, and that "I don't give drugs to my kids."

D.A.R.E. has been widely criticized as ineffective, a product of the Just-Say-No '80s. But its L.A.-based proselytizers carry on as if Nancy Reagan is still the first lady.

What's ironic is that, had this case happened in D.A.R.E.'s hometown, the parents very well could have had a prescription for their weed, and the cops might have had to lay off.

This little kid is doing what the government told him to do and this little kid is doing the exact same thing the Nazis and the communists dictators told their people to rat out their family, friends and neighbors and that snitching got to people that were snitched on were arrested and killed just because it is sheeple kids and citizens like this, that is causing the country and it's people to lose all their rights freedoms and liberties.

Is that what you people want? A country run by a dictator. I know I don't.

In my opinion the kids of the single parents are more involved in this kind of wrong things as they have no one who take care of them and the one who look after them so this is the reason why they choose the way to drugs. single parents should keep a keen eye on their children.Jennifer

The fact that the kid had access to it is wrong, but I see nothing wrong with weed itself. I'm an honors student that smokes every once an awhile and I still get high marks on my exams. Bottom line: you should not keep your weed/booze/guns/keys where your kids can get at them because DAT SHIT AIN'T FO' CHILLENS!

BortMalort

I think this is not only completely justifiable, we need to step up the effort, and get more kids turning in their parents for more victimless crimes. The devil-drug marihuana causes negroes to rape white women and corrupts the youth, turning them to a life of sex-slavery so they can get their next "hit". Those fucking liberal reefer addicts deserve to be tortured and executed for their heinous crimes.WOOOO AMERICA #1! USA! USA! USA! BETTER DEAD THEN RED!

First off, I find it completely hilarious that most people who posted here had to resort to name-calling.

Cannabis is not in any way, shape or form dangerous to the user. The only way someone could die from marijuana is by carbon-monoxide inhalation, which can only result from smoking an impossible amount in one sitting. And that is really only speculation as there have been no reported deaths due to cannabis use.

Now, I am not by any means a religious person, but this speaks for the benefits of marijuana. Take note: Jesus and his disciples performed healing miracles using a "holy anointing oil," which contained a substance known in the Hebrew language as "kaneh-bosm," where the word cannabis comes from. Jesus used hemp oil to cure people. The Bible refers to a "plant of renown," its name is not mentioned, but I kind of like to think it's the cannabis plant as it can be used for so many purposes.

Did you know that hops, the plant used to make beer, is also a member of the Cannabis family? Just a random bit of trivia.

It was once used to make medicine, and is now being used to treat and cure many illnesses. There is no point asking why it is illegal, the reason is obvious. The drug companies want to stay rich. If it were legal, and we could grow our medicine in our own backyards, they don't get paid. Simple as that. They fear this one little plant because it does so much. It eases anxiety, depression, can stimulate the appetite of a terminal patient, it has reversed cancer... It opens your mind (something the government just won't stand for.) Why do you think alcohol- something that numbs your mind- is legal? They want to keep you stupid. Heavy alcohol use will lead to death, so will cigarettes, yet they are legal.

Our government has spent give or take a trillion dollars on the Drug War...

Mind-expanding, psychoactive drugs should be legal, in my opinion. Living under the thumb of the government is not living. Only until we have the freedom to explore our consciousness are we truly free.

What's dangerous about having a couple of joints?

...

Now...what's dangerous about a bottle of Smirnoff's or a bottle of Absolut?

@Phil E. Drifter The two are not analogous at all.  AT ALL.  To try and conflate the two just shows your lack of understanding and or complete brain washing.

Anyone who thinks its ok for a child to so easily access weed, your sick, although weed isnt a hard drug, there's a reason these programs are still around. Weed is fine if your grown and keep it between yourself and other GROWN people but for a child to be able to obtain it and bring it all the way to their school is a perfect example of UNETHICAL and IMMORAL parenting. He is just a child... not a snitch, or a POS, when he hears a much larger and scarier authoritative figure pressure him and his peers im sure it only makes sense.

A few months ago I stopped at a gas station and they had people in front of it begging for money.  They wanted the money for DARE.  I looked at them and said:  "So you want me to give to you money and then you can give my money to the cops?"  They said yes, and I just said no...

Its unfortunate because I don't think this kid was old enough to realize the repercussions that his parents arrest might have on his life. They get time or he gets take away because of child services or something like that, then what? he lives with family who might feel resentful, or might not be able to fully care for the child and he ends up in a worse position, if no one can care for him and his parents go away he, goes into foster care? cause thats a good situation! (sarcasm)  I am in no way calling this kid a snitch but maybe we need to educate better, i went through D.A.R.E. and it teaches kids to say 'no' and go tell an adult, this kid was put in a difficult position, I don't believe the parents give the kid weed, but im sure they were open with him because they felt they did not need to hide their responsible use from him. i'm interested to see where this kid will end up.

When I was growing up back in the 1920's (heh), a very stern law enforcement officer (IIRC it was a city cop) came into the classroom and barked at us about drugs in the 5th grade.  A direct quote, "One hit or marijuana, and you will be addicted for life."

WTFH do you expect when you tell lies like that?  Do the authorities really expect kids to thank them later on down the road for deliberately lying to them and using blatantly false scare tactics?  Hell no.

Tony

Congratulations to DARE for succesfully employing Stalinist tactics in brainwashing kids to obey the state rather than their parents, and to have them turn their parents into the authorities for victimless non-crimes like putting something into your own body whatever you damn well please. Things to say here: parents should start educating their kids that the state is dangerous and immoral and question authority, and the other thing is: these kids are lost. Even if they realize that what they did is wrong, they'll be devastated and wracked with guilt. If they don't think what they did was wrong, then their parents need to disown them and forget about them because they're ruined.

My family has a four-generation rift due to a case similar to this, older son and designate-incompetent policeman. This whole thing is nothing new. The Fourth Amendment is gutted. Try to find a "DARE Officers Guide." In this jealously-guarded publication (copyrighted with no ISBN number) I bet dollars to donuts (no pun intended) that there is instruction on how to skirt the Fourth Amendment using children as infomrants against their parents. No matter, the courts will support the actions of the police, even if lawless. Think of the psychological implications, but I am sure the cops have. Again, this is nothing new. Hope that Taser cam show ushers in a new standard for police documentation, or lack of.

Kudos, Mr. Romero for TELLING IT LIKE IT IS. It might not sound pretty, but that kid WAS A SNITCH. And it's the truth.

Nothing DOUCHEY about Marijuana-Greg-it might be illegal but that doesn't mean you need to demonize something just because the government hasn't woken up and accepted this wonderful healer as it is!

Nothing wrong with calling the kid a snitch-Mr. Romero is just calling it as he sees it. I agree with him 100%! Thanks for having the courage to not be PC all the time and call a spade a spade!

Nothing "douchey" about Marijuana, Greg. Just because it's currently illegal does not make it bad.

WITCHGRASS: a pipe dream tells the story of a girl who turns her parents into the police in the DARE program.

If you care about this issue, read this book. Ask your bookstore to order it or get it from Amazon.

Love and peace,

Dave

PS: video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

PPS: Here's just a sampling of recent reviews:

"Wilkinson's incredible writing washes away any initial reader skepticism within the first ten pages -- he's that good. And he excellently performs the novelist's magic trick of creating living, breathing characters that we care about, laugh with, cry with, and even take "Safety Meetings" with (read the book)."--- Steve Elliot, TOKE OF THE TOWN, Village Voice Media

"There are two sides to the pot debate, and Wilkinson gives us a very informed take on both sides...Witchgrass is additionally a fun ride, with interesting, well-wrought characters, humor, real drama, and an excellent sense of place...Wilkinson, though a first-time novelist, showed as much confidence and command of his language as he did of his subject. The man knows his way around a sentence, and for someone who takes pride in crafting good ones, I found that Witchgrass really delivered, down there on the level of the line...Everything about the presentation, from syntax to physical production, was first rate."--- John Vorhaus, (CALIFORNIA ROLL, UNDER THE GUN)

"Dave Wilkinson's new book, Witchgrass, does not disappoint. It has the entire gamut of insanity that results from marijuana prohibition...The story moves through its pages in punchy prose. As the seasons change the story of a small town's battle with the marijuana law and its consequences unfolds. The reader is provided with a world filled with vivid scenes and true characters...This is the sort of story that needs to be told...Read "Witchgrass" to learn how one small town fought back."

--- Hoam Rogh (SATAN'S SMOKE)

"Wilkinson delivers some history, a lot of fact, a sense of Maine culture AND a compelling story...The characters are well-crafted, the history and fact about the War on Drugs are entwined in a fashion that doesn't disrupt the story, or make it a lecture. At the same time, it provides a snapshot of life in Maine...Witchgrass is a compelling story with a lot of dividends."

--- Rachel Hawkridge, Libertarian Party

"Not many helpful books dealing with cannabis are available. Most are propaganda or at least heavily slanted in one direction or the other. For academic knowledge related to farming or processing industrial hemp some great studies are available. But there are also times when academic papers just don't cut it, and it would be helpful for a more personal and holistic approach...Witchgrass, written by Dave Wilkinson, is a novel written for just such purposes. It aims to clarify the effects of America's drug war on society and civil liberties...To an audience familiar with the struggle to legalize cannabis, Jack Herer's influence will be noticeable...Witchgrass will certainly frustrate many readers with its ideology, as any good book dealing with controversial issues should. But Wilkinson makes a decent effort to represent both sides of the infamous drug war, even while it is clear on which side he stands...Witchgrass: a Pipe Dream, is a worthy read, especially for those interested in glimpsing a larger picture of the social impact of cannabis legalization.

This is another reason not to have kids. This kid will think twice about doing that again after the parents beat the crap out of him. Also, this "children-turning-parents-in" thing sounds like something the Nazi youth did back in the day.

It's no different than all the children that die from a weapon that was not properly secured. How many kids bring guns to school or knives or prescription drugs. Everyone should own a lock box to secure these items. Legalization would be great. My son at age seven is very aware of "smoking and drinking" are bad. I believe the program where they simulate a drunk driving accident and have a mock funeral etc it great for deterring drunk driving. Maybe we could invite crack heads and meth users to class and watch them twitch themselves into a frenzy. that would scare the kids.

No one has ever died from weed. People die every day from Alcohol. The parents should have gotten in trouble for allowing access to the drug I think

i feel bad for that kid, he's going to look back in about five to ten years and realize just how awful that decision was for him to make, if he's not addicted to pharmaceuticals for crippling depression by that point.

on the subject of DARE, wow, terrible program. i actually won a DARE essay contest back in the day. and now i smoke weed. they really ought to just defund that program. i seriously spent most of middle school thinking everyone was doing drugs but me. so where was my peer pressure???

Amen Kim. My family is totally decimated due to a case similar to this. Again, I am sitting at my home minding my own business with no criminal history and having committed no crime. The only thing they had was a supervised search by my son, which they "omitted" from the contentious affidavit for purported search warrant. The courts support these actons by police.

i can't see why weed is so hated in the law enforcement community. why not focus on turning in parents who drink and drive? like "hide daddys keys" (HDK) lol but seriously it's lame ok just lame. If the kid didn't want his parents to smoke he should have said something to them first that's all. who's to say his parents aren't D-bags? who's to say they don't treat him like the majority of parents seem to treat their kids... like crap. this article was a bit bias though. author smokes weed. the end

Drugs like marajuana and LSD have been controlled not for their harmful effects on the body, but for their potential mental effects on the mind.

These possible mental effects call into question many commonly-held attitudes, beliefs and customs which have confined and controlled America and the West, and that fact is what really SCARED THE HELL OUT OF ESTABLISHED POWER in the 60's and 70's. The psychotropic class of drugs have the potential to wake the individual mind up from its "MATRIX POD EXISTANCE" and see human life and the world unfiltered.

Parents obviously should have kept their stash where the kid couldn't find it. Nothing wrong with smoking weed -- just don't do so around your kids, or let them get a hold of it. (NOT because there's anything wrong with it, just that it's not something for kids.)

And no, the kid wasn't "douchy" -- he's a kid. Kids aren't miniature adults.

ONE argument I will quibble with here: the whole "it's natural" crap. "Natural" doesn't equal "good." Snake venom is also natural. (Note -- I'm not comparing marijuana to snake venom, just pointing out a stupid argument)

Thats stupid marijuana is the least drug that cops and (D.A.R.E) need to worry about its organic, and grown god made it.While the cops are out there looking for kids who are smoking marijuana, half of them are out there smoking and playing beer pong. The (D.A.R.E) program are ruining the kids mind that marijuana is bad, yes they shouldn't do it but turning in your parents and now there goes ever seeing is mom or dad again and to FOSTER CARE he goes (im 100% sure he didn't know his mom and dad were gonna go away for a while because of that)The (D.A.R.E) program is stupid the more they put there logo and word out there teenagers do it even more.

War on the People
War on the People

This "WAR" on drugs is a war on the people, and this is an example of this.

I'm sure the D.A.R.E. officers forgot to inform these minors that if they did turn in their parents, they would likely be taken from their homes and put in foster care, where their chances of being ABUSED are up TREMENDOUSLY. I'm sure the D.A.R.E. officers also forgot to mention to the minors that turning in their parents would also leave a criminal record for their parents to carry around, also creating difficulties for the parents when they want to get loans, or work for example. So their economic future would be in greater risk also.

I'm sure that the minors were told, that despite all the 'ramifications' (big word, cops probably don't even know it) that hell yeah, they should turn in their parents, and their friends' parents for pot. Makes a good article, makes it look like they are effective, makes it look like this 'WAR' is working, and creates further job justification. Notice, I did not say "security" I said "job justification".

What a disaster. The D.A.R.E. program just f'ed a family.

Randyt02
Randyt02

Amen my friend. Though I do not smoke the stuff I feel it is okay and should be legalized recreationally. This war must have "enemy combatants" and those must be taken down hard.

Steven- I'm sorry for the situation that your son found himself in. NO offense but i think there is more behind his addiction rather than he just started smoking weed one day. His addiction or reason for seeking drugs is bigger than smoking marijuana. the drug is 10% of his problem. Today is the time to deal with the 90% of his problem. There are many treatment centers that include the family in the treatment process. Good luck to you and your family. Please do not take this as an insult.

kat
kat

This is ridiculous. I smoke weed in my property and my 11 year old child knows what is it and knows that it is eligle to smoke it. He knows that in November California will be voting on it as well. He also knows that i do not approve of minors smoking or drinking until they are 21. My parents were very honest with me when i was growing up. My father used to smoke too. I didnt start until i was 25. I cant wait until its completely legal and i dont have to look like a criminal to my child. He is a very smart child. He has his opinion on various topics. He understands the difference between thinking liberal and conservative. He knows the difference between what is right and wrong. He is quite the politician at school.

Rita
Rita

Semantic bantering aside, the point is that the government is asking children to 'inform' on their parents. I thought the DARE program was intended to educate kids against drug usage, not turn kids into crimefighters. What's next? Asking kids to review their parents tax returns to make sure that deduction is indeed legal? Asking kids to rat out parents that exceed the posted speed limit? Asking kids if their parents are hiding Jews in their attic? Shame on our government. Shame on any citizen who is not outraged by this disgrace.

Randyt02

If it was medical the kid would not have turned them in or been upset enough to.Drunk or stoned parents are rarely the joy they think they are, and are usually ignoring the kids way too much.

It's Ironic that many of the same people would say NO to health care - as health is required for life liberty and the pursuit of anything- say getting loaded is a right..

My son started off smoking pot and then gradually drifted to pills which landed him in rehab. So all of you pro-marijuana jerkoffs who think that it can't lead to anything more dangerous are deluding yourselves. The kid who told seems to be smarter than his parents...after all he isn't the one who was arrested and taken to jail, was he? It also is quite humorous to read such angry comments by pro-weed people. Isn't the stuipd ass pot supposed to mellow you assholes out?

Noman

I guess it would be OK for him to have drifted into very heavy drinking then, seeing as that is legal and all.  Alcohol is THE gateway drug, have no illusions.

And of course nothing dangerous can come of heavy alcohol consumption, that's certainly a fact.
