Say good-bye to your old tires.

Want to do something good for the environment and clean out your garage-full of old tires at the same time?

Now you can.

Los Angeles County residents can turn in their discarded tires at the Free Tire Amnesty event happening this Saturday from 9 to 3 p.m. at five locations.

There, the tires are shredded and turned into something called "rubberized asphalt concrete," or RAC, a lightweight pavement material which is more durable and safer than traditional asphalt. It's pretty cool so go do it:

Civil engineers plan to use the material in projects throughout the country.

CalRecycle, also known as the Department of Recycling and Recovery, collected 33,000 tires in LA County last year, as part of their campaign to green the roads and cut down on the millions of tires that get tossed into landfills each year.

So if you are tired of watching your stockpiles of tires collecting dust, bring them over to tomorrow's event. For more information, visit www.PavingGreenRoads.com.
