Overturned School Bus Reported In Boyle Heights Outside First Street Elementary School

One person died in a Boyle Heights collision involving a school bus.
Updated after the jump with information about a third suspect. First posted at 3:29 p.m.

One person was killed and 50 about 21 38 18 others sustained minor to moderate injuries in a three-vehicle collision involving an overturned, occupied school bus outside First Street Elementary School in Boyle Heights, fire officials said.

A news bulletin about the reported collision was sent out by LAFD spokesman Brian Humphrey at 3:22 p.m. The location was said to be 2332 East First St., which is also the address of the school.

Humphrey stated that 75 rescuers and two LAFD helicopters were assigned to the collision.

Update: He said that the fatality was an adult in one of the other vehicles that collided with the bus who was possibly a pedestrian. Two others in the two other vehicles involved in the crash were hospitalized, Humphrey said.

Dozens of injured students aboard the bus were from nearby Roosevelt High School, he said.

Update #2: A California Highway Patrol official told reporters that a BMW moving eastbound on First Street allegedly ran a red light, struck a pedestrian and ran into the bus, causing it to swerve out of control and tip over.

Two people in the BMW, described by KNX 1070 Newsradio as young people or possibly juveniles, allegedly ran but were captured by a nearby construction worker who brought the suspects to police.

The CHP spokesman said the driver of the BMW would be tested to determine if he was driving under the influence of drugs are alcohol.

Humphrey stated there were "26 non-injured students and 18 students" hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the bus was said to have been taken to a hospital in serious condition. The two in what Humphrey described as a black car were looked over by paramedics, the CHP official said.

It's not clear what the extent of their injuries were. They were reportedly being detained.

Update #3: The CHP's Officer Miguel Luevano said a third person was arrested Monday evening. Fox 11 News reported that the three suspects were teenagers in the black BMW, which appeared to be an early-'90s 3-series four-door.

About 44 students were on the bus, according to the LAFD.
